Here’s a photo from south central Indiana taken about noon on December 21, 2023.
El Niño winter in the Midwest do indeed tend to be warmer than usual.
And in other weather news…
Temperatures in parts of China hit their lowest levels since records began, state broadcaster said. The provinces affected included Shanxi, Hebei and Liaoning as a cold wave gripped large swathes of the country.

@PucksFool Happy Solstice day to you as well.
My favorite day of the year. The nights get shorter from here on out.
As somebody who luvs snow & winter, this is starting out as another pathetic stretch in northern lower Michigan. Had a 16 inch snowstorm about 3 weeks ago, long since melted. Am able to xc- ski by driving an an hour to ski on man-made snow, but while better than nothing, it is not a lot of fun ( but have gone 10 times so far this season). The Upper Peninsula of Michigan ( UP ) is famous for prodigious amounts of snow in their snowbelt regions near the coast of Lake Superior, and they have not had any more snow than we’ve had ( and we are supposedly in a snowbelt region here, lake effect used to be very reliable ). And I’ve been up there in the winter, these are fierce snowfall areas, so it is pretty rare that they don’t have skiable snow. Nothing good in the 10 day forecast, either. Winter appears to be shrinking in the Midwest.
As of 10:27pm, est, we are heading toward spring. Yayyyy!
An Englishman says, “Today is the shortest day of the year.”
The Frenchman replies, “Mais oui, today is the longest night of the year.”

Looks like our drought won’t be ending anytime soon.
Good to see that California is drought-free.

Brown Xmas this year. Possible record high temps projected for Dec 23-24 (50F or more). Rain. Temps in central and southern MN will not be below freezing until after the holiday. Maybe a slight snowfall in northern MN, near the Canadian border.
Temperatures at 78 weather stations across the country hit record lows for the month of December, while average temperatures this month in northern and some central parts of China hit record lows set in 1961, according to the National Meteorological Centre.

Meanwhile, MN had record high temps for Dec 24 and Dec 25. Mid-50s F. Typical is maybe 27F. Brown Christmas. Rain (1" to 2" in the metro area) all the way up to just north of Duluth, where it was cold enough to turn to snow. From about central MN south, the ground is not yet frozen, so the water goes right into the soil. Good for farming. They need the ground moisture. Cooling this week, might have highs below freezing after New Year’s Day. Lowest average daily temp is about 24F, from about Jan 10-20 every year. That temp has been slowly, and steadily, rising over the past few decades. Dec 2023 is estimated to be the warmest on record.
We picked up about half an inch of rain yesterday. Looks like we’re expecting some nights just at of below freezing and waming up into the 40s in the day.
A rainy Christmas Day here in Florida…

I’m still waiting to sow some wildflower seeds that I purchase earlier this Fall. The weather needs to be consistently below 45 degrees and we haven’t had that stretch of weather yet here in the Boston area. Maybe next week…

Be careful out there…

Travel in the winter can be dangerous as well as a pain in the tush. The upper midwest is pretty accustomed to dealing with this. There is a good YA book that takes place largely at Hartsfield Air Port in Atlanta on Christmas eve when a 2-3 inch snowfall grinds the city to a halt.
