Yes, burn and recover the energy. But NIMBY works against that. Coal fired power plants could probably be adapted to burn recycled plastics (and for that much trash after metals and glass are removed).
There is a waste handler here in SE MA that seems to be able to generate energy from solid waste without spewing a bunch of toxic stuff all over the area. They have been in business for a number of years, and I think they do a good job at what they do. I’m no expert on this, but wanted to offer this up as what seems to be, a successful operation.
Unfortunately, because they process so much trash so efficiently, they sometimes burn the evidence in very unfortunate criminal cases such as this one…
