Politics is banned on METAR

Any post that is purely political and does not have a Macroeconomic or investment topic will be deleted. That has been the rule on METAR for over 15 years.

Let’s consider macro consequences of the current political climate. Here is what ChatGPT comes up with:

Apparent arbitrary political decision-making—such as what was seen during Donald Trump’s presidency—can have significant and wide-ranging macroeconomic impacts. These impacts stem not just from the specific policies enacted, but from the uncertainty, inconsistency, and unpredictability that such decision-making often introduces. Here’s how:

  1. Market Volatility and Investor Confidence…
  2. Trade Disruptions and Supply Chain Realignments…
  3. Business Uncertainty and Planning..
  4. Fiscal Policy and Long-Term Economic Health…
  5. Institutional Erosion and Rule of Law Concerns
    • Undermining independent institutions (e.g., the Fed, Department of Justice) can shake investor and public confidence in a country’s governance framework.
    • Perceptions of corruption or favoritism can reduce foreign direct investment (FDI) and raise borrowing costs due to increased risk premia.
  6. Exchange Rates and International Perception
    • Erratic foreign policy decisions can lead to a weakening of the national currency as investors seek more stable markets.
    • A weaker currency can spur inflation and reduce real wages, impacting consumption—the largest component of U.S. GDP.

In Summary

Arbitrary or erratic political decisions, especially when enacted by powerful economies like the U.S., have significant macroeconomic effects. These typically manifest through:
• Reduced investor confidence and business investment
• Disruption to trade and supply chains
• Increased market volatility
• Long-term concerns about debt and institutional stability

The Trump administration’s decision-making style—often impulsive, centralized, and less consultative—illustrated these effects vividly, even though short-term metrics like GDP and employment initially appeared strong due to stimulus measures and late-cycle economic momentum. However, the long-term macroeconomic implications—like increased debt, weakened global trust, and institutional damage—are still being debated and felt.

Let’s consider the aim of the poster…

@SuisseBear that is an example of a post that is on-topic for METAR because it focuses on economics.

Yep - something SuisseBear did admirably!

I’m like that but what is economic benefit of smearing, libeling someones reputation?

Which post, and which specific sentence, does this:

smear, libel

?

I don’t see it.

I’m not going to point it out, it would be free clicks for the offender but it did have a relation to the Oval Office, a most favored target. The man got elected, live with it. Out-elect him if he bothers you instead of whining like a child who lost his marbles.

Let’s not forget the original name for Economics was Political Economics. Its difficult to completely separate them. As politics impacts the economy and investments. But some postings do go too far as political comments.

From one member of the melting pot to another, what you call whining is someone else’s speech.

What you just wrote above is more personal and derogatory against your fellow board members than any examples you have given of offending posts (none given).

If it can make a small impact, better to speak up now on the macro effects of government policy than to have a forced evacuation later.

That is exactly what President Trump does everyday in the name of economics. So if the President can do it, so can the rest of the country.

So you are what you criticize?

Not really sure what you are on about - if you take issue with ChatGPT talking about apparent arbitrary decision making, well, that is well documented, rather than a ā€šsmearā€˜. Not for nothing has the term TACO been coined. Perhaps worth considering realities once in a while:

You are right!

ChatGPT does not post at METaR as far as I know so I don’t care what it talks about.

Admittedly, I need to do better. Often, macroeconomic impacts seem obvious. That’s probably not good enough. Sometimes we need to connect the dots and not just assume that our understanding of macroeconomic impacts is well understood by others.

I am so much less in what I criticize than Trump.

Science does not post on METAR, but we all need to pay attention when science talks.
