Here is another perspective

Can’t check a channel you don’t understand

In Apple’s subsequent January 2013 quarterly earnings conference call, its chief executive Tim Cook warned analysts, “the supply chain is very complex, and we obviously have multiple sources for things. Even if a particular data point were factual, it would be impossible to interpret that data point as to what it meant for our business.”““Even if a particular data point were factual, it would be impossible to interpret that data point as to what it meant for our business.” - Tim Cook”

Cook continued to recommend that analysts not base their predictions on supply chain “checks” throughout 2013. However, a series of analysts continued to issue “supply chain check” reports that fueled headlines despite being completely wrong.

On the contrary, the CEO of Skyworks sounded incredibly optimistic about his company at an investor conference within the past month…so much so that they’re raising earlier EPS estimates from $7 to $8 (quite an upgrade) within 18-24 months. Obviously, he knows an order of magnitude more than any Wall Street analyst about anything that is knowable regarding the iPhone. If things were looking worrisome, seems to me that at best he would hold pat on prior projections, or even start to gently guide expectations lower. Instead, he says Skyworks is hitting the ball out of the park, and ups guidance about 15%.

As for Apple, I think the only guidance they ever give is at the quarterly earnings reports…and I’ve never seen them miss. There’s a first time for everything, but given that basically every year people say the iPhone train is running out of steam, and then they’re wrong…my stance is just wait for the third week in January.
