A number of months ago, I posted about an IRS customer service representative creating an internal referral to the Taxpayer Advocate Service to help me with some issues I was having with my deceased father’s personal income taxes.
Although it took a while to hear from my advocate, I would like to report that I had a very good experience with resolving the issues. The advocate took an independent look at my father’s taxes, found the issue, and worked with the IRS to resolve it and send my father’s refund. I worked directly with a single person who I could contact directly and who followed up after the refund was issued.
I had never heard of the Taxpayer Advocate Service before this. They have a website with a lot of helpful information – https://www.taxpayeradvocate.irs.gov/
This page shows a huge roadmap of how returns are processed and when different letters are generated – https://www.taxpayeradvocate.irs.gov/get-help/roadmap/.
This may be a resource for anyone having trouble resolving an issue with the IRS. In my case I had received multiple letters from the IRS promising resolution within certain timeframes and the IRS kept missing their dates.
