Tesla Model 3 Unveiled

Elon unveiled the $35,000 model 3 today. I’m no longer a shareholder, but I was very very impressed. And in 24 hours he already has over 130,000 PAID reservations. For a car!!!

Half tempted to get back in, stock price be damned; Elon continues to change the world.

I’d post a link to the 27 minute video (it’s worth the watch) but can no longer find it - if anyone else has it please share.

Here’s a great summary from Bloomberg this AM:

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-04-01/tesla-s-mo…

If Elon can get the car produced on time and with the described features, specs and accoutrements (eg 700+ Superchargers), it will absolutely be a game changer.

130K preorders in the first 24 hours. Sheesh…

Bought 1000 shares of TSLA on 2/22/16. Will sell when the next Xover occurs. Stir, Rinse and then repeat.

http://stockcharts.com/h-sc/ui?s=TSLA&p=D&yr=0&m…

The folks who ordered the Model 3 will tack on about $20,000.00 for the options which are ala cart. To boot there is NO SPARE tire. Rim and tire are about $1000.00. Tesla does not do State auto inspections.

$2000.00 is buried into the cost of the car for the privilege of using the Super Chargers thru out the United States, Canada and Europe. The monies go into the installations of all the Super Charger stations.

Something to ponder !

Quillnpenn,

very nice…if you care to share the next swing trade you are considering that would be great. If not, no problem. I do not, as yet, have a subscription to StockCharts. I do look at Barcharts every day.

thanks

andy

You don’t need a subscription to use StockCharts.com.

Basic is free but there are subscription packages for more advanced charting, such as to screen for crossovers

Subscriptions are needed if you create various portfolios to monitor as well as writing scanning tools to scan the general population of stocks or ETF’s or certain portfolios per a scanning tool.

Bought ALB and JBHT who have a track record of 9 out 10 years that do well for the month of April. For May, YUM and SAFM. YUM did well for the month of March.

Stopped Seasonality trading in 2003 to 2015 because of an illness. 1998 to 2003 were the best years.

Thanks…I can also use the chart for ALB that you provided and change the symbol for the stock I want to review.

Keep posting and thanks again

Andy

I should have listened to myself. On Apr 3 Elon tweeted that they were up to 276K orders. I can’t find what they are at since then.

TSLA Apr 1 close $238
TSLA Apr 6 close $265

To put the order figure in context, BMW sells approximately 400K-500K 3-series automobiles per year worldwide.

Tesla booked 276K orders with a cash deposit in 4 days. Boom.

utahchris,

re: temptation

you don’t want to listen to yourself. You’re putting yourself in a position of damn if I do, damn if I don’t.

Charts are the Footprints of your success in watching what our peers are doing with their hard earned money. We just jump onto their coat tails ride it out.

As an investor, you missed the bus.

Thanks for the note. You are right, despite Elon’s tweet that they are now up to 325K preorders (that’s $325m in free float for Tesla btw, ala BRK) I think the ship has sailed for now.

Right now (last I heard) they lose $4,000 per car they make or something. How much will they lose on these babies? You’d think it be hard to make a car profitably for 35k when you can’t make one profitably for 90k, right? The 325M they make now may pale in comparison to the amount they lose by the time they deliver these.

Or has Tesla said anything about how much it will cost them to produce the Model 3?

I think the Tesla Starship has sailed for now.

Even if Tesla is a great car and a great company run by a great entrepreneur, TSLA, the stock, has too much volatility risk. You really need patience and good timing.

http://softwaretimes.com/pics/tsla-04-07-2016.gif

Consider that you could have bought TSLA at $140 earlier this year and it has almost doubled since then, it makes sense to have patience and buy on dips. It’s not as if you are waiting for a few cents, you are waiting for a serious red flag sale. TSLA is a case where a bit of good TA can save you a whole lot of bucks. The lower your cost basis the higher your yield.

Silly contention to not differentiate between cost of current production and investment for the future.

Those figures are based on operating expenses (R&D and other investments like gigafactory) and don’t reflect the profit potential of these vehicles.

You have to look at gross margins which they have the highest in the industry. They’ve been in the high 20 percentage the last few quarters except for Q4 which was a 18%:

https://ycharts.com/companies/TSLA/gross_profit_margin

I think with the streamlined design of the Model 3 and improvements in battery costs/tech they should be able to make a decent profit on each vehicle as they scale the battery and car manufacturing.

Sincerely,
Charlie

Wow. If it makes you feel good that they’re beating out FORD FREAKING MOTOR COMPANY by a few percentage points in gross margin, than you are a man of great faith.

By the by…that was on a car that costs $90k or something. You think they’ll do that good or better on a $35k car?

All this said, I’m really just talking out of my @$$ here. I don’t know anything about Tesla. But man if I were a shareholder I’d be taking the money and RUNNING!

Their argument is that a lot of the cost is in the battery, which Gigafactory should help decrease the cost by 50% or more. The Model S and X are supposed to help fund the Gigafactory. And of course higher volumes of parts will reduce cost as well.

I don’t know the numbers but my guess is that Musk’s plan wasn’t to sell cars at a loss permanently.
