The Captain
That is better than 90 percent of the people on the planet. We are just about there. No wonder Musk is going all in on FSD.
Andy
Wow! Incredible. Amazing! Tesla Fanbois fall over in a faint.
Then they find out that Ford has auto park, hands free, which also searches for spaces and notifies the driver.
And here are, you know, another dozen or so:
https://cars.usnews.com/cars-trucks/advice/best-self-parking-cars
To be fair, that’s a pretty low bar.
Why is he having to manually pull out of the parking spot? Is that normal with FSD?
We test drove a Lexus about 9 months ago that could park itself.
Yeah, that’s why I’m wondering about the hooping and hollering. My Hyundai can parallel, perpendicular, or diagonal park itself with me standing outside the car if I want.
**IONIQ 6 can remotely park itself under several parking scenarios such as parallel park** , diagonally park and perpendicularly park as well as back into and drive forward out of a parking spot by itself – with you standing outside of the car.https://www.hyundai.com/eu/models/ioniq6/features.html#:~:text=2%20(RSPA2).-,IONIQ%206%20can%20remotely%20park%20itself%20under%20several%20parking%20scenarios,standing%20outside%20of%20the%20car.
I agree but I like to put that out there because of all the comments I get from the apoplectic old farts.
Andy
Apoplectic Old Farts would be a good name for this board.
Parking is more of a closed system. Line up to the spot and then work within the small group of specs. AI is great with closed systems.
I’m not sure how that is really relevant. What percentage of Ford vehicles on the road can do it? Did Ford download an OTA update to 95+% of their vehicles to add the feature? One of the best “features” that Tesla provides is that they download new features to their cars, almost all of the 2019, 2018, 2017 models got this feature downloaded and can use it if they are willing to pay for it. Does any other auto manufacturer add features to their 2018 models across the board? I doubt it.
The problem it is overbilling FSD.
It’s only overbilling if nobody pays for it otherwise it’s pure profit.
Andy
I mean overstating/overestimating FSD when I say overbilling. I am not being literal.
Billing
noun
1 the fact of being advertised or publicized in a particular way: they can justify their billing as the American League favorites | he shared top billing with his wife.
The Dictionary
My mistake. I thought all the drooling was because “the car can park itself” (which will lead inevitably to FSD being close, I guess), a feature which has been available on many other cars for years, even decades. (First model with the feature, according to Google, 2003. I recall seeing wide advertising for it for Lincoln or Buick or somebody several years ago.)
But yes, being able to add something to old cars is a neat trick. It’s true most car makers just add new features to their new models and trim packages, something Tesla doesn’t do because, uh, not a lot of new models?
But I get a kick out of “and are willing to pay for it.” Thanks for the chuckle. I really really hope “subscription” doesn’t take off in the automotive world, but I suspect my hope will be dashed on the corporate rocks of greed once again.
That is a good way at looking at it too.
Andy
My impression was that the drooling was about the fact that it uses vision only to park, no other sensors. Every other previous implementation (as far as I am aware) used various sensors in addition to camera inputs. I still think FSD is terrific, but it is neither F nor S yet.
It’s not just a neat trick, it is also a general improvement in the way consumers are treated. That’s because not only are new features added, but bugs a fixed (including sometimes safety related bugs). I can’t tell you how much my Honda minivan annoys me every time I have to drive it. All their systems using the screens are horribly designed and full of bugs (I’ve tried newer Hondas and the same is still true, in fact, in a recent review of the newest Honda EV, the Prologue, the UI was of of the biggest negatives listed). And they WILL NOT fix any of it, even if I bring it into the dealer. Heck, just for map updates they want me to pay a couple of hundred bucks! Forget it. My Tesla sends map updates periodically as part of their normal OTA update schedule. I can’t wait till I can get rid of that vehicle!
This is really an insidious phenomenon. It will dramatically slow the progress of ubiquitous features, safety or otherwise, in vehicles on the road. It’s partially due to corporate greed, but it’s also partially due to the way other things have begun to be sold and accepted by the consumer (media is a big example). It took years and years for anti-lock brakes to become universal (I ordered them on my 1994 Honda Civic for an extra $1500). It took years and years, and a government mandate (starting 2018) for rear view cameras to become universal. And there are, and will be, plenty of other examples.
To me, the worst sin of the automakers and assorted politicians was the essential killing of v2v technology. Had that been properly supported by the automakers, and perhaps even mandated when it was supposed to be mandated, many thousands, even tens of thousands of lives would have been saved by now. But instead due to feckless automakers, and slimy politicians, most of the bandwidth allocated to that was “reallocated” to greedy corporate interests basically so more cat videos could be watched (social media, etc).
Heh. Both.
Other car companies are following this trend. I know Audi is now doing it - you just have to pay for it - just like Tesla. I am pretty sure Hyundai has plans to do it too. Want to have an older vehicle get an OTA enhancement? Pay for a subscription.
So, thanks?!?
That’s not the case. I don’t think you understood what I described above. Tesla provides the OTA updates to everyone, and all general features added become available to everyone. No fees charged at all*. The only additional fees right now are for the specifically listed features that Tesla includes in “Enhanced Autopilot” or “FSD”. I really hope that doesn’t change because I really like almost all the added features. I’ll give y’all a tiny example, but one that definitely improved my driving experience. Last year sometimes, Tesla added a nice feature that changed how turn signals work (there probably is a selector option somewhere in the settings). The problem that exists nearly everywhere is that people sometimes signal to change lanes and then forget to turn the signal off. Most vehicle manufacturers added a mode such that if you tap the turn signal lever gently, it’ll only flash 3 (or 5, or 7) times and then stop on its own, but if you push the turn signal lever till it clicks, it’ll lock the turn signal on, until a full near 90 degree turn has completed, and then will automatically turn off. But that still didn’t work for everyone as blinkers were still left on for miles at a time. Tesla added a really trivial feature in that release. Since they are “watching” the road anyway, they do the following - when you tap the turn signal lever (or button in newer models without stalks), if you simply switch lanes and then continue straight, it’ll turn off the turn signal automatically. But if the lane that you turned into is a turning lane (it can “see” the image of turning lane), it’ll leave the turn signal on and then turn it off automatically after a near 90 degree turn as is usually done. It’s a nice feature and makes it a tiny bit easier to drive. Add a few tens or a hundred such features and it becomes even easier and more pleasant to drive. Add more advanced driver assistance and it becomes EVEN more pleasurable to drive!
I dread the coming of nickel and dime features in vehicles a la BMW charging to turn on the heated seats. I truly hope it doesn’t become ubiquitous across manufacturers.
* There are, of course, a few rare exceptions to this which involve model level segregation. For example, Tesla charges to unlock additional performance in the non-Performance trims. And I think they used to charge to unlock additional battery capacity in lower trims that had the larger battery installed and software limited.
