The joys of owning an EV

Recalls for software updates, insurance problems, warning of fire, neighbours threatening to sue and a freezing cold wait:

Can’t wait to get an EV

Don’t buy Porsche EVs.

All hype and misinformation by those making bank on the ICE industry.

Not quite:

Posting the letter to the Taycan Forum, the company advised owners to avoid charging their car whilst it is parked adjacent to a building or inside their garage until the problem is fixed.

Honestly I find these posts amusing. As though gas engine cars don’t have recalls or other troubles.

But being the owner of an EV, I am in awe of those who are “against” EVs, and consign them to the pool of idiots who were similarly against microwave ovens or cell phones because, you know, “new.”

Most people who are against EV’s have never owned one, never driven one, have no basis for their opinion. Its all fear and misinformation.

The bull artists. 100% agree!

My sister and BIL love their two EVs. Except for the Musk regrets.

My other BIL loves his hybrid Volvo.

I’ve never owned a fast motorbike but don’t want one of them either!

You don’t know what you’re missing. Model Y is the best car I’ve ever owned. Took a drive the other day using FSD on city, freeway, and residential streets. Drives better than most people. It feels to me like Tesla is pretty close to an unsupervised version. It is pretty remarkable how far this tech has gotten in such a short time.

…and when they get all the glitches out of EVs and sell them for a more sensible price I’ll probably have on (might have no choice). Until then I’m quite happy with my gas guzzling SUV.

Stay on topic. A motorbike is not an EV.

Have you driven an EV?

Yes, I quite liked it.

In other words are spreading bull.

Why? We all have better things to do. I do anyways.

I am rapidly getting hooked on FSD. The latest version (13.x) is really terrific. Today it drove us from my driveway (it BACKED OUT of the driveway by itself) all the way, 40+ miles, to a friend’s house in another city. It literally did everything except, right at the end when I had to manually choose a “guest” parking spot at their condo. Then on the way home we stopped at a grocery store, where it may have parked the car, but I chose to take over and park in a spot that I liked better, and then it drove from there to a nearby shopping center, and then from there all the way home. When we arrived home, I took over and pulled it into the driveway.

It’s really really good. It feels so luxurious to have it drive me everywhere, and much less stressful than driving myself. There was a bunch of traffic coming home and it handled it admirably, all the stop and go, all I had to do was sit there and talk to my wife and son who were in the car with me.

I knew there was a downside to this technology!

And carefully and attentively monitor the traffic and all the road conditions…right? Because FSD is still just a Level 2 ADAS, so you are still legally driving the vehicle at all times, and have an obligation to treat the FSD as simply a tool aiding you in driving the car and not the actual driver.

There is no thumbs down!

The Captain

Why would you thumbs down? FSD isn’t self-driving yet. You have to pay attention and be able to take over for the ADAS immediately. If you don’t, you’re almost certainly breaking the traffic laws and committing negligence (not legal advice!) - to say nothing of putting yourself and others in danger. So even if there’s only a very tiny chance that FSD might cause an accident, the penalties for you as a negligent driver in that circumstance could be enormous.

That’s ALWAYS! If the car detects (and it is VERY sensitive) that you aren’t paying attention for even a few short seconds, it’ll severely warn you. They even have some sort of “5 strikes and you’re out” system, that if you don’t pay proper attention 5 times, you can’t use FSD anymore for a week or so. I’ve never received even one strike. My son once received a strike, but we are still not sure why exactly, I was sitting in the passenger seat at the time, and it was midway on a 200+ mile drive where he drove pretty much the same the whole time.

Anyone who treats FSD as true self-driving will lose FSD in short order. That’s just how it works today. Some say that it’ll become true self driving soon, but no matter how good I think it is, I am not convinced that it will happen so soon (I am not convinced that MY car, and most of the other Tesla’s on the road today will be enabled to be truly self-driving. I am a little more convinced that a robotaxi might be truly self-driving sooner than generic Teslas on the street today.)

Thank goodness. And I wasn’t aware of the particulars of Tesla’s “nag” system - glad to hear it’s that robust.
