The Social Dilemma

I recommend “The Social Dilemma” on Netflix now. An award winning look at how social media manipulates consumers into becoming social media addicts.

This released in 2020, I remember hearing about it during COVID but it slipped my mind post-COVID. Then it popped up on my Netflix suggestions two nights ago, I jumped on it, and within two-minutes I was sucked into the most informative film ever on the companies behind social media.

There are loads of interviews with ex-employees of these major corporations who spill the beans on just how coldly analytical the tweaked A/I becomes in manipulating users into spending more time on the service, while selling more ads to their eyeballs.

This is an amazingly good documentary film, and after you view it, you will consider lowering your intake of social media. ???

“The Social Dilemma is a 2020 American docudrama film directed by Jeff Orlowski and written by Orlowski, Davis Coombe, and Vickie Curtis. The documentary examines how social media’s design nurtures addiction to maximize profit and its ability to manipulate people’s views, emotions, and behavior and spread conspiracy theories and disinformation. The film also examines social media’s effect on mental health, in particular, the mental health of adolescents and rising teen suicide rates.”
