TSLA & XOM

TSLA is up ~10% today
XOM is down ~2% today

Are these swings related to the news that USPS and many other delivery companies are switching to EV trucks?

Are TSLA and XOM going to be opposites in rise and fall in the future?

No. The price of oil is down and TLSA sold most of their disastrous Bitcoin position, giving investors confidence there might be some adult leadership there.

No. The price of oil is down

Why is the price down when there is an oil shortage?

Why is the price down when there is an oil shortage?

Concerns about economic weakness in China and the possibility of a recession in the EU and US. (WTI is still up 37% YoY.)

Why is the price down when there is an oil shortage?

The markets are an election held by millions of participants day to day, minute to minute, microsecond to microsecond.

When asked why any stock price moved the answer is that more buyers or sellers arrived on the market. The why of that is always a guess–usually based on recent news or headlines.

The truth is no one knows. Finding sellers or buyers willing to share their thoughts probably will reveal a whole range of reasons. The market is rarely monolithic.

What oil shortage?

We had a spring of industry excuses and media hype and hysteria designed to run up prices. Now, we are in the entirely predictable post-holiday fall in prices.

The Era of Expensive Oil Is Here to Stay

Even as prices drop to a three-month low, the world is still struggling to produce all the oil it needs—and the impact on global economics and politics will be profound.

On July 6 the global benchmark for oil slid below $100 a barrel for the first time since April, raising the hopes of politicians, business owners, and drivers around the world that the days of high fuel prices were coming to an end. We’re not there yet.

In fact, the underlying dynamics of oil supply and demand point to a prolonged period of higher prices, lasting months if not years. Demand for fuel is still growing as the world picks up where it left off before Covid-19 lockdowns. There’s a shortage of refineries to turn oil into fuel. And the world’s largest oil producers are hitting up against the limits of what they can drill. All this as Vladimir Putin’s war suppresses exports from Russia.

Just like TV, summer rerun season.

We heard this “peak oil” hysteria in 2008.
