Union Pacific in discussions to merge with Norfolk Southern

Would create transcontinental rail system. Likely to be challenged before approval. Might force BNSF to merge with another like CSX. And what about our two mostly north-south railroads: CN acquired Illinois Central. CP acquired Kansas City Southern to become CPSK.

Reports today say the merger is moving forward. Approvals may take years.

Unlikely, given the current administration. It’s all about “cutting red tape” and “getting government out of the way.”

I predict a decision quickly, perhaps by Q1 next year. The only real impediments might be trying to merge the union contracts and mollify a few customers with “stand in place” rates for 5 years or something.

Be interesting to see if Buffett’s railroad tries to link up with another, this gives UP/NS an incredibly powerful footprint.
