War update

Nikita Gerassimow reports that a port used by the Russians was hit by a Ukraine missile attack. This was a significant set back for the Russians and will delay the planned offensive

A storm from Odessa or Kyiv is currently hardly possible and not planned. Instead, troops are moved to #Donbass to east-ukr. to encircle formations at #Donezk .
This scenario was also considered likely in this country recently

This earlier planned offensive planned for Donezk will be delayed or impacted. Also, Russia is being pushed back into defensive positions and will need munitions, food and fuel to hold them.

While my opinion that Ukraine is ruined has not changed, the length of this war has.

The estimable Pulitzer Prize reporter William Arkin has an important and revealing article in the execrable Newsweek:

I will summarize the main point: most reporting on the war is not comprehending nor addressng a Huge Fact, and that is that the Russians are showing great restraint in much of their artillery and bombing, not destroying much valuable infrastrucrture, mostly avoiding central Kyiv, and mostly not targeting civilian poulations except on sea coast. Why?

…goal is to take enough territory on the ground to have something to negotiate with, while putting the government of Ukraine in a position where they have to negotiate.

I found it well worth a read.

…much of their artillery and bombing, not destroying much valuable infrastrucrture,

Remember the “logic” of the neutron bomb in the 80s? Kill all the people but leave the valuable hard assets intact.

the Russians are showing great restraint in much of their artillery and bombing,

Or, maybe they don’t have that much ammo. How many missiles have they used? Over 1,000? Total US production of the AGM-86 is about 2,000. I would think the Russians would have built about the same number, so, between training, other military adventures, plus Ukraine, they may be running low, and Putin still has the Baltics, Poland and Finland on his conquest list.

Reminds me of the kid who asked for leniency as an orphan. His crime? Killing is parents.

Russia running out of precision guided munitions, may rely on dumb bombs, says report

Of course dumb bombs are mostly dropped by smart pilots in vulnerable airplanes.

Ukrainian pilots have been fighting Russian pilots for several years. Their combat experience level is very high. This is something that can’t be said for most NATO pilots still in uniform. They train hard but lack the combat experience edge. So … thought is that Ukraine as a NATO nation would add a very valuable asset to the mix?
