What good is NATO?

NATO has more weapons and manpower in total than Russia, so are Putin’s threats based in reality? The whole concept of a nuclear arsenal is to assure mutual destruction if attacked and NATO has weapons to do it if hit with nuclear weapons by Russia. THe Russian generals know this and are not insane.

Also does anyone really think that Putin is dumb enought to want to take on all of NATO after the tough time he is having in the Ukraine.

This being the case someone needs to step up and make sure that the Ukraine gets EVERTHING they need; jets, drones, etc., and see if Russia really wants to attack a NATO country.

A: Russian generals ARE the answer to pulling the plug on Vlad. They must do it before the unthinkable unfolds.

Also does anyone really think that Putin is dumb enough to want to take on all of NATO after the tough time he is having in the Ukraine.?

A: A desperate wannabeemperor, Vlad is quite likely thinking he’s simply in a high stakes poker game and can pull off just about any bluff with his trade mark expressionless gaze. When his generals remove him from the table, they can pull the plug on his folly.

What good is NATO?

Didn’t previous POTUS ask something like that after spending some time with Vlad?

Just imagine if everyone had hopped on board that dumbazz idea? Vlad would have us over a barrel right now.

Tim <spent his whole working life (military and civilian) involved with NATO one way or the other>

The idea was thrown out there for the suckers. There is no other way of thinking of it realistically but suckering.

“What good is NATO?” was a rhetorical question as it is fine to have the “Big Stick” but you have to be willing to use it.

I had a great Uncle who was an avid hunter into his 80’s and he had an impressive collection of rifes and shotguns. Some of these were many decades old and worth thousands of dollars. He used evey one of those guns when needed. When asked why he would risk using these guns he said I bought them to hunt and not as wall art.

Do we have NATO to fight or to look pretty in pictures?

Are you serious? If so you missed completely on the purpose of NATO. NATO’s purpose to make it clear that picking off individual “members” is not an option … thereby deterring war.

What were the three purposes that NATO was formed?
In fact, the Alliance's creation was part of a broader effort to serve three purposes: **deterring Soviet expansionism, forbidding the revival of nationalist militarism in Europe through a strong North American presence on the continent, and encouraging European political integration.**

Then there is the little fact, the elected government of Ukraine chose to not join NATO in 2010.

Plans for NATO membership were shelved by Ukraine following the 2010 presidential election in which Viktor Yanukovych, who preferred to keep the country non-aligned, was elected President. Amid the Euromaidan unrest, Yanukovych fled Ukraine in February 2014.

It would be somewhat unseemly for NATO to try to force countries to join the mob against the will of the people don’t you think?

You have just proved my point because what do you call Russia’s attack on the Ukraine if not expansionism and the encouragement of nationlistic militarism?

Ukraine was promised support in exchange for giving up their nuclear weapons and to take a slow track into NATO.

This is turning into another case of a toothless West and empty promises.

Why is the supposedly strongest alliance in the world allowing Russia to call the shots?
Why is NATO threatened with an “escalation” by Putin when we should be setting the “Line in the Sand”?

I’m looking for a bumber sticker that says “Zelensky for President” as it looks like he is the leader with any kind of a spine.

From what I see as a much more objective position, Russia is now threatening Sweden if she joins NATO. Finland is in that boat.

Belarus and others are in the front of the mass murder boat.

The truth is we will have no choice but to take down Russia. Not enter on her territory so the nukes possibly are not launched, but beat Russia out of every other nation by force.

This is hardly take Ukraine and done. None of us are kidding our selves at all in this.

We do not know how well our antiballistic weapons will work. By that I mean we do not know if they will be an airtight defense. We might come out of this entirely unscathed by nuclear weapons, even if Putin launches them.

If anyone has questions about missile defense systems they should ask Israel as they have the most pracitical experience under war like conditions.

Perhaps they should get some of these systems from Israel for the Ukrainians to use against the Russians

Israel has zero experience with ICBM. The small rockets up close fired against Israel are hard to hit.

It is an apples to oranges comparison.

Because NATO is a defensive pact, not an offensive one. There is no NATO authority to attack another country, nor defend a non-NATO member.

Hawkwin,

Do you believe with Putin as the leader of Russia this wont constantly be expanding beyond country after country? He has made his claims to several NATO member states clear.

Do you believe we wont face Russia eventually on the battlefield?

Given how poorly Russia is doing in Ukraine and the likely impossibility of them holding control of Ukraine long term, what makes you think that Russia has the capacity to attack another country?

MONACO has the capability to attack another country.

Likelihood of that attack being successful is a different question. But still, you wouldn’t want to be the innocent citizen who coincidentally happens to be at the point of that attack.

Do you believe

What I believe has no relevance as to whether or not NATO is authorized to take offensive action in this situation.

The ends do not justify the means. If NATO attacks, then Putin will be (at least partially) right.

Find a Coalition of the Willing but NATO needs to stick to its charter.

I’m not sure what fruit stand you are at.

Russia isn’t throwing Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles at the Ukraine it IS using short range tactical rockets which are the same weapons the Russians supply to Hamas.

Hence you talk to Israel.

They also grow a lot of apples and oranges.

Hawkwin is your last name Chamberlain, first name Neville?

History can repeat itself and after TWO WORLD WARS Europe knows this more than most.

In case that you have forgotten the countries of the Far East were involved to a certain extent in both as RUSSIA has now asked CHINA for military aid in its invasion of the Ukraine.

…is your last name…?

The question was to bring back into focus the last time someone tried to appease a despot in Europe.

If you give Putin the leeway to conquer the Ukraine then ipso facto the way is paved for WWIII.
