Why do men die more from CV-19?

**Why Are Men More Likely to Die of Covid? It’s Complicated.**

**Sex differences in Covid death rates vary widely from state to state, suggesting they are rooted in behavior as well as biology.**
**By Azeen Ghorayshi, The New York Times, Jan. 19, 2022**

**...**

**Men are more likely to have jobs in transportation, factories, meatpacking plants, agriculture and construction — occupations with higher rates of Covid-19 exposure and fatalities. Men are also more likely to be incarcerated and to experience homelessness, increasing their risk of virus exposure.**

**Women are more likely than men to report hand washing, mask wearing and complying with social distancing restrictions, all of which may lower their risk of contracting the virus. And women are more likely to be vaccinated....**

**Biostatistical modeling showed that this disparity could be substantially accounted for by greater inflammatory responses among men, suggesting a biological difference.... women produce a stronger immune response than men....** [end quote]

The inflammatory response in the lungs (called a “cytokine cascade”) is deadly.

The data used for the study was the states, collected from April 2020 through December 2021 by the GenderSci Lab at Harvard University, which studies how biological sex interacts with cultural influences in society.

It’s not surprising that both biological and social/ behavioral differences affect Covid deaths. This is true of many causes of mortality.

The positive takeaway from the data is that men were protected as much as women by vaccination, mask wearing and social distancing…if they complied.

Pushback to vax and mask mandates is particularly strong among police and fire departments, typically male dominated.

And what is killing the most police officers?

COVID-19 was the leading cause of death among police officers in 2021, report says

The report found 301 officers died from COVID-19 in 2021, a 65% increase from the year before. Seven states — California, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, North Carolina, Tennessee and Texas — had more than seven officer deaths due to COVID-19.

The take away some of what is happening to men can not be helped such as workplace infections and homelessness to a degree depending on a kinder society. Allowing for homelessness, men are often veterans, is truly the shame of our nation.

But a lot of it can be helped. Ignorance on vaccine information and the spreading of outright lies has done uncountable damage. The courts need to remedy this later.

Hi Leap,

You post often about the “disadvantaged” and how we Americans need to be “just” and give them their fair share. You talk about getting people out of the cycle of homelessness, etc.

You also have stated that you are located in the Boston? / New England area?

Are you familiar with “Mass and Cass”? It is the intersection of Massachusetts Ave and Melnea Cass Blvd in Boston / Dorchester and the new Mayor of Boston has committed to moving a large group of homeless folks living on the streets at “Mass and Cass” to a nearby hotel.

Guess what? Not everyone WANTS to go to the hotel. They prefer to be homeless. They prefer to stay on drugs and live on the street.

Not everyone wants to be saved ya know.

What is your point? Not to help people who are often mentally ill? Is that in order to save government money and keep your taxes low?

That seems to be all your saying, but I want your words not mine so I am asking that as a set of questions.

Mentally ill people who do not want help wont be forced to take help. If you are implying the majority of mentally ill people do not want help you’d be wrong.

…accounted for by greater inflammatory responses among men…

Men have a higher ACE2 receptor concentration which is what COVID uses to enter cells.

The new Mayor of Boston completed this about a week ago, after being sworn in about 2 months ago. That’s quick action to address a significant problem. Even if someone wanted to stay in this tent city, Boston needed to clean up this area. (Boston overall is doing fine, with the biggest problems being traffic, a shortage of housing, and artists being displaced by an influx of tech workers.) Sometimes what the individual wants is unacceptable to society. Tent cities, illegal drug markets, and violence are just a few examples of unacceptable behavior. Society has made much progress in the past 200 years in finding ways to assist those in need, and ways to reduce violence. The solutions are not obvious or easy. There are about 600,000 homeless in the US, and about 40,000 homeless veterans.

Mayor Wu Calls Mass. and Cass Tent Clearing ‘A Turning Point’ for Boston, January 13, 2022
“There was no resistance Wednesday at the intersection of Melnea Cass Boulevard and Massachusetts Avenue as crews moved to clean up the homeless encampment… 154 people formerly living in tents in the encampments were successfully referred to housing and all of the tents removed. Those who return will be approached by outreach workers who will offer them services and find them another place to go.”
