Confirming a previous leak by Moore’s Law Is Dead, RedGamingTech has suggested that “AMD are actually more excited about Zen 5.”

According to RedGamingTech, Zen 5 chips are expected to adopt a hybrid architecture just like Intel Alder Lake CPUs with a mixture of power-saving Zen 4 cores and speedy Zen 5 cores. However, AMD’s top-of-the-line Zen 5 desktop SKUs like the Ryzen 9 processors won’t pack any Zen 4 cores and will only have performant Zen 5 cores. Reportedly, Zen 5 APUs that will be used in laptops and low to mid-end systems may have Zen 4 cores.

For performance, RedGamingTech reports that Zen 5’s IPC gains are bigger than Zen 3 to Zen 4. The leaker puts the number at 30% for single-threaded workloads. Furthermore, core counts for AMD Ryzen 8000 chips are reportedly going to double. Flagship parts, for example, will have up to 32 cores.

AMD is also looking to introduce some big changes to the cache in Zen 5 processors. Per RedGamingTech, due to architectural changes L1 cache will be significantly increased. L2 cache will also allegedly see a big change and will be unified across the CCX.

Finally, the L3 cache will see a huge change as it will be stacked so all the core clusters can access it, resulting in reduced die size and lower latency.

As with all the leaks, none of the information presented here came from official sources, so take it with a huge grain of salt.

That is interesting and hopeful. Zen 4 was supposed to be the shrink, is Zen 5 achieving these potential results without a shrink? Amazing if so.

I have got to say increased core counts help myapp a great deal, doubling the cores usually doubles the throughput. 32 core threadrippers seem to be very hard to get hold of in Europe and usually come with a significant premium, or they limit the number of processors to buy to 1. If you want more you have to buy vendor-built systems, in my case at a cost of £3000. Eventually we found a Bulgarian company that could supply 8 32 core naked threadrippers plus motherboards and went with them instead.
