A campaign on cartels?

The Trump administration is considering launching drone strikes on drug cartels in Mexico as part of an ambitious effort to combat criminal gangs trafficking narcotics across the southern border…

The U.S. military and the CIA have dramatically stepped up surveillance flights over Mexico to collect intelligence in advance of what is likely to be a major campaign against the cartels, which the White House has labeled a threat to national security, the six sources said. The flights are being carried out with Mexico’s approval, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has said.

Hopefully people have thought things through. Drones are cheap. What is to prevent a retaliatory strike with a fleet of small drones dropping small bombs and/or incendiary devices in a city just across the border? Doesn’t have to be militarily effective to cause panic in the population.

What benefit would that bring the cartels? Cartels are in business, not in warfare. While possible I think the idea is far fetched.

Again, I agree with Cap. The more likely retaliation would probably include cyberattacks, car bombs, or attacks on border patrol agents or U.S. infrastructure in Mexico.

The Cartels employ ex soldiers from the Mexican Army. They have been at war with the Mexican Government for decades. Anyone that thinks they know what they will do is Naive.

** Mexican authorities have been waging a deadly battle against drug cartels for nearly two decades, but with limited success. Thousands of Mexicans—including politicians, students, and journalists—die in the conflict every year. The country has seen more than 460,000 homicides since 2006, when the government declared war on the cartels.**
