Annoyed at myself

Like so many Americans I got beat up in the market since November… Had a bunch of cash after selling some in December (and getting beat up on everything I didn’t sell). When AMD dropped to 90-ish I was still in shock and missed the buying opportunity. I knew it was happening but was honestly too afraid to go to the Fidelity web site and look at… that… shrunken number. So sad.

Did anyone else pick up some in the recent dip?

I don’t have access to my AMD shares at the moment, which is a real pain. I’m not in the US, and TDAmeritrade no longer allows trades from foreign investors. I have not yet been able to find a good way to transfer them into a NZ trader.

I did however have a VERY small amount of money and did pick up some in the 90s, from a newly created NZ account (that turns out I can’t transfer into from US).

I was keen to sell SOME at the 160 mark where it stayed for a while, which would have been nice.

My biggest mistake was taking some money (not trivial, but not life impacting) and for the first time deciding to put money into Motley Fool Stock Advisor share picks. Shares I wouldn’t normally have touched with a barge-pole to be honest.

Pretty much EVERY one of those have dropped massively, almost to junk. eg 5 droped 70 to 85%, another 4 from 70% to 45%

That was a costly mistake I won’t make again.

On the positive hand, as a long timer the average buying price for my main AMD shares is around $5 which isn’t that bad

I figure if you hit anything within 10 or 20% of a top or bottom you are doing pretty good.
If you are still bullish on AMD, go for it!

There are two types of people who buy at the bottom or sell at the top. Liars and (lower f) fools. I did it once by accident. There were a couple of stocks I was thinking of selling, but I was on my way to the Canadian Nationals. 1) I didn’t plan to check on stocks while playing in a tournament, and 2) I wasn’t sure I could sell from Canada. So I put in some GTC sell orders, and one ticked off at my chosen price. (Which was $4. on a trash company–not that the shares were trash, their business was trash. They later merged with another trash collector.)

Snap. I did too, moved 20% of my wealth, into Motley fool picks, last October and November. Around 25 stocks should give me a decent indication of whether Motley Fool picks work, I thought. Not all went into tech but a lot did. Am down 45%. Fear of missing out and not drip feeding it in are my failings.

I sold out back in January before Q1 earnings ($114). After Q2 earnings, I got back in at $94. Probably more luck than skill. The issues I was concerned about never materialized.

Intel is still a hot mess for now.

Tell me about it. I console myself by knowing that we’re supposed hold these stocks for at least 5 years and not panic over (hopefully) short term drops. We shall see. The stocks I bought based on TMF recs are in a 401k so I can sell them easily, but my understanding is that I wouldn’t be able to benefit from losses offsetting gains, since gains in 401ks are not taxed anyway.

And again - ditto!
