For years I have questioned how necessary it was to have an Apple watch on the charger for an update to 11.1. Yesterday was an eye opener. My watch was charged to 100% when I put in on the charger. After the update the charge was down to 95%. Even if the system could not charge during the update, that is a lot of usage.
That seems strange to me, I would think even after update while on charger, battery would remain at 100%
During an update the watch does much more intensive work than during the routine daily average. The charger is likely designed with the daily average plus redundancy in mind which is much lower than update intensity.
The best guess from a former Apple reseller.

I didn’t notice a drop, but rather noticed it had charged to the full 100% after the update, maybe making up for the work it did as I have the battery set to really only charge to 80% per the notes on battery life preservation… Since then, this morning, it returned to the 80% level, better, it seems… So maybe the setting as changed during the update, but returned on its reboot…
How did you set your battery to 80%. Oftentimes I forget to take off charger for a bit too long and it goes to 100% which is not desirable. Thx
