Current surge: second worst

The statistics of concern for me is the current death rate.

I’m not entirely sure that is the only statistic of concern.

Personally, I’m also concerned about the risk of long Covid. Having symptoms hang on for months (or even years) sounds like a pretty high price to pay.

Looking at the bigger picture, just getting sick itself has costs. A lot of people around the country can barely afford to take half a day off work to get routine medical care. How are they going to fare having to be off work for a week or more even if the disease itself isn’t that bad? The financial hit to anyone living paycheck to paycheck could be far more devastating than the disease itself.

Go on with your life, but don’t be an idiot about it. It’s not that hard, really.

Don’t be an idiot? Hmmmm.

We’re in big trouble.

No doubt. I’ve had numerous acquaintances get Covid recently and some had a pretty rough stretch despite being vaxed and boosted. One poker buddy is an athletic ~45 year old who caught it traveling to Wimbeldon recently, he was laid out flat with fever, body aches and severe fatigue for ~5 days, then had continued serious fatigue for another 2 weeks, and all that was after taking Paxlovid fairly early on. Another friend a ~55 year old lady in good health, spiked a 104 fever and was coughing up blood, took Paxlovid and had a nearly miraculous improvement shortly thereafter.
