EV Reliability New:Good Used:Bad

The one area where EVs seem to have more problems is when it comes to tires. Specifically, 1.3 calls for service out of 1000 were due to an EV with tire issues, while combustion cars saw just 0.9 in the same population. It’s worth pointing out that newer EVs do not seem to suffer from the same problem.

So rah rah EV! A new EV won’t leave you stranded.

BUT EV have irritating quality issues.

The two biggest problem categories this year were “Infotainment” and “Features, Controls and Displays,” the latter of which EVs particularly struggle with. EVs had 30% more problems with Features, Controls and Displays.

“From such seemingly simple functions like windshield wipers and rear-view mirror to the more intricate operation of an [automaker’s] smartphone application, this category is particularly troublesome in EVs,” the report reads. "The PP100 incidence in this category is more than 30% higher in EVs than in gas-powered vehicles.

Electric vehicles are far less reliable than vehicles powered by combustion engines, according to Consumer Reports’ 2024 reliability owner satisfaction survey results published on Wednesday.

Data gathered by Consumer Reports from owners of over 330,000 vehicles ranging from model years 2000 to 2024 show that EVs are 79 percent less reliable than ICE-powered vehicles on average, despite fewer moving parts and simpler drivetrain designs. Plug-in hybrids are even worse when it comes to reliability, with a staggering 146 percent more problems versus traditional gas-powered cars. Interestingly, traditional hybrid vehicles scored best, producing 26 percent fewer problems versus ICE-powered vehicles.

New technology teething problems. EV reliability has improved but still problems.

For the buyer of a new EV: pas de problem. It’s covered by a warranty.

But most USians drive a used vehicle. A used EV likely is much more problematical for an owner. Thus the US fleet adoption to EV is very likely to be slooow!

  • Five- to ten-year-old Tesla EVs are at the bottom of Consumer Reports’ latest used car reliability report.
  • That’s a huge difference from new Teslas, which have been massively improved.
  • One of the reasons for the poor reliability of older Tesla models is linked to the company’s efforts to ramp up production.

If one takes the time to read the article a Tesla EV is more reliable than an EV from other manufacturers. But all used EVs are less reliable than a ICE vehicle. Though obviously some ICE vehicles manufacturers are better than others [Toyota/Honda].
