Putin likely is worried that, as the Russian WWII conquest of Karelian Finland would almost certainly be rapidly reversed if a plebescite were to be held in those provinces, Finland in NATO might make that into something “coming soon to a theater near you!”

As of yesterday, Finland and Sweden are both backed by the UK’s nuclear stick, and the UK’s pretty good conventional forces. If the Russians think they are getting beat up by Ukrainians with US and UK weapons, wait until they run up against UK troops.
