It seems that it is not that we are facing more hurricanes than before, but that the proportion of big hurricanes intensifying more rapidly and covering more territory with more water and greater wind velocities is likely to continue to increase.

Here is a graph of the number of hurricanes/typhoons over the last 40+ years, both total and major (Cat 3 and above).
