Israel Secretly Targets U.S. Lawmakers With Influence Campaign on Gaza War
Israel’s Ministry of Diaspora Affairs ordered the operation, which used fake social media accounts urging U.S. lawmakers to fund Israel’s military, according to officials and documents about the effort.
The Israeli government’s connection to the influence operation, which The New York Times verified with four current and former members of the Ministry of Diaspora Affairs and documents about the campaign, has not previously been reported.
If this sounds familiar, it should — this is the same tactic Russian operatives used in an illicit influence operation that targeted the 2016 U.S. election. That campaign also used networks of fake social media accounts, posing as Americans, in an attempt to influence the U.S. political process. The Russian operation led to outrage from policymakers and the media, multiple year’s-long investigations, and the indictment of 13 Russian nationals and three Russian companies for their involvement in the illicit influence operation.
Will Washington respond just as forcefully to a similar campaign orchestrated by an American ally? Don’t count on it.
Hamas is doing something as well. I do not know what but something.
Hamas lies to the NYT all day that only innocent civilians are dying. Not one single militant has been counted in Hamas’s numbers. The NYT does not notice that.
Love the double standard. I am talking the UK, EU, Japan, China, Russia, Ukraine, etc etc etc at least 50 more times. Israel? Why not? They all are.
Does it only matter to you because Jewish Israel is doing it?
