There is new evidence that shows that some Saudi government officials were more involved in the 9/11 attacks than previously known. According to a new filing in a lawsuit brought by the families of the 9/11 victims, al-Qaida operatives received significant support from members of the Saudi government in their preparations for the attacks.
As Daniel Benjamin, president of the American Academy in Berlin, and Quincy Institute senior fellow Steven Simon explain in a new article for The Atlantic, the plaintiffs allege that Saudi officials “were not rogue operators but rather the front end of a conspiracy that included the Saudi embassy in Washington and senior government officials in Riyadh.
I always felt this was the case and that Iran was scape-goated into a war. Most of the hijackers came from SA after all. And we did eventually learn the whole WMD story was an out-right lie. But we cannot go after Saudi Arabia. They are an ally and control world markets on petroleum.
Related, perhaps the best reason to get off fossil fuels right there.
There was literally zero evidence or reason to believe Iraq had anything to do with 9/11. It was simply fiction created by politicians to advance a separate agenda.
The 9/11 Commission Report detailed several disturbing links between the hijackers and the Saudi government, but evidence was largely circumstantial. It is also politically inconvenient, the Saudi royal family was very close to the POTUS at the time, and so these links were ignored and the false Iraq story was promoted.
Saudi involvement in 9/11 reminds me of the thread we are having about how many Americans widely misunderstand the current economy. For example, they think unemployment is high, when in fact is at 50 year lows, and though there is a help wanted sign in nearly every window. Or they think the stock market has crashed, when in fact the Dow is setting records.
The reason for this disconnect from reality is that an alarming percentage of Americans are willing to believe whatever they are told by certain outlets. The playbook is to simply tell a false story about 9/11 or the economy or whatever narrative you need to advance and 50% of the population will accept it regardless of what their own eyes tell them.
Anyone paying attention knew it wasn’t Iraq, given that nearly all the hijackers were from Saudi Arabia (and very little happens in that kingdom that the Saudi government doesn’t know about). But whether there was “official” countenance was unproven, even if suspected.
I remember seeing a television interview with a father whose son was killed in the Iraq adventure who was stunned when he at last heard George Bush say “the Iraqis were not behind 9/11”, and this was a guy who had cause to do a bit of deeper thinking about it. And didn’t.
It’s worth remembering that the Saudi brand of religion is almost as radical as the others in that part of the world, and it wouldn’t be at all hard to find some government officials who would be willing to be complicit in an attack such as 9/11. (Heck, we could probably find some in our own government who would be complicit in an overthrow of our own government
Anyways, big news, except actually kind of expected.
The Saudis that took part flying the planes were more likely to be dissidents than SA operatives. SA locks up a lot of fanatics. Not that I can tell the difference, but the fanatics object to the current government in SA.
Every sentient human knew that Iraq was not the instigator of the attack on 9/11. Unfortunately, only 32 percent of the population of the us was sentient.
A majority of Americans blame Biden for the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan and not the three previous presidents who spent 20 years and $1.7T propping up a government that lasted 11 days on its own. I was in the minority who opposed the invasion AND am glad we got out. Would we prefer to be defending Ukraine and Israel AND propping up a puppet government in Afghanistan right now?
Americans at this point do not care about the evacuation from Afghanistan.
The logic behind the Iraqi invasion was to free up the oil for China. Saddam would have been problematic. China getting the oil could become an industrial powerhouse. Instead China building its military aiming to be a military powerhouse and get the oil for herself. This delayed any military confrontation between the US and China. Delaying the potential WW III.
It is important to remember in 2003 the US treasury was papering over a Great Depression if you follow the economic cycles. Major depressions cause huge military conflicts.
It is interesting who did not read stuff behind the scenes back when the Iraqi war was proposed. At that time the papers in DC on preemptive war were offered up but not in the press. The press does not educate the American public.
Correction - Educated Americans at this point do not care about the evacuation from Afghanistan. There’s plenty of people who lay the blame on the current administration.
