“This is what “the gathering storm” (the title of the first of the six volumes of Winston Churchill’s World War II memoirs) of a world war looks like. … What gathering storms gather is strength. Then they expend their stored violence.”
George Will succinctly summarizes events and his sensible conclusion regarding current world events that I see as affecting my existing and prospective investments.
I read it but must have missed anything sounding like a conclusion. ‘It’s bad and it will get worse’ is not a conclusion
He seems to lack his usual irrational exuberance for good ole yankee capitalism, freedoms, and private property as the reason we will prevail.
G Will: Neither nominee has given any evidence of awareness of, let alone serious thinking about, the growing global conflagration.
An assertion only. Not showing awareness of growing conflagration? Maybe. But that’s not how elections are run. You talk about what you have to and don’t distract with the other stuff. Not seriously thinking about a conflagration? How would he know? He got a crystal ball? Vulcan Mind Meld? I’m sure the current admin, including Harris, is up to date on all this stuff. They have to go around telling everybody? As far as what they’re doing/will do? Just like Roosevelt et al they will do what they can in its time and not what they can’t until they have to. As far as the other contender, we know he’s all over this in his own way so yes, even he knows about it and is proceeding accordingly. How could G Will even think otherwise?
I will say that this gathering storm is worse than all the previous ones I’ve seen (and heard people crying about that turned out to be nothing but background noise while encroaching prosperity steamrolled most of the world.)
I don’t know if the storm is gathering but the Ukraine war has dispelled a lot of conventional wisdom about the balance of powers and the technology of war. If we were to compare the axes of evil of 1939 vs. 2024 I would rate the current ones paper tigers. Germany conquered most of Europe, Russian can’t even conquer one county. Never before in modern times has the Middle East had a superpower.
My only real fear is nuclear stupidity. Thinking about it I figure that the westernmost part of Europe is as safe as it gets.
Since the thread is about investing I refer you to my reply to Wendy. As for philosophy, I like Jacobowski’s, There are two possibilities…
This is the lamest part of the press’s job. The idea that everything has to be an “I got you” because the reporter’s job makes no sense without it.
This is an election year. Promising a war to head off worse will not get anyone elected.
If George Will wants answer…well he used to provide them quite well. He is shirking the qualities that had set him apart. Clickbait has ruined him as well.
As we know, Jacobowski ran out of alternatives, and was ready to drink poison, until the Colonel showed up.
Good movie. Nice to see a comic like Danny Kaye in a straight, dramatic, role. There was an ep of “Twilight Zone”, that Jonathan Winters played it straight. Did a surprisingly good job.
