I’m pretty sure it’s been a while since anyone has seen a Gulf of Mexico bear. But then I remembered that after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010, all the major oil companies had submitted response plans featuring the protection of the walrus.
This made me chuckle. Practically all of our specs were lifted from other specs which were lifted from other specs.
This became so endemic to our programs that I had to staff two engineers to comb through references to make sure there were no conflicts and to scrub ‘inane’ references.
The client, our SME and the vendor sat around a table during one technical update to find 5 references to ASME code. Of those, 4 were either irrelevant and not applicable or in disagreement with each other.
The vendor said he padded our contract by 15% to “accommodate” spec requirements.
