OT (perhaps): Red carpet treatment but no deal?

One thing that was evident: There was no deal made. And the ceasefire Trump said he wanted in place when the summit ended was far from becoming a reality as he increasingly put the onus on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to “make a deal.”

“There were many, many points that we agreed on – most of them, I would say,” Trump said at the news conference, speaking after Putin. “A couple of big ones that we haven’t quite gotten there, but we’ve made some headway.” “There’s no deal until there’s a deal,” Trump pronounced.

One interesting thing out of the conference. Putin said that the war would not have started if Trump had been president rather than Biden.

Why is that interesting? Putin started the war. Is he saying that he’s so scared of TFG that he wouldn’t have dared to invade? Maybe he’s saying that after working so hard to pump fake information into the US to help TFG win in 2016, he got upset about him losing in 2020, so he decided to invade Ukraine?

I dunno. Do you know what he meant?

Putin also said the 2020 US election was rigged because of mail-in voting.

These two look like buddies. Zelenskyy is obviously being set up to be the one who is opposed to “peace”. It will be interesting to see how he and the EU respond.

Clearly evidenced by him having been able to stop the war within a single day.

Of course Putin said that. And, of course, it is a lie.

Remember crimea 2014 was under Obama. I don’t recall much if anything was done about that.

The US and EU imposed sanctions and suspended Russia from the G8. Are you implying that Russia only does bad stuff when a Democrat is president?

Let’s also remember that Russia worked very hard to get TFG elected in 2016. Seems weird that they would do that if TFG is the only person who will stop Putin from doing what he wants to do…

Not at all. I think Russia does bad things regardless of who is in power at the time, and Europe has done virtually nothing to counter them. It really shouldn’t be as much our problem as theirs.

Sort of, but..Russia matters to the U.S. almost as much as to Europe because, despite the geographic distance, Russia is a nuclear superpower and our direct rival - at least before this year. Its actions affect global security through NATO obligations, destabilize energy and economic markets, and extend influence worldwide from Ukraine to the Middle East and Africa. Russia also targets the U.S. directly through cyberattacks and election interference, while its efforts to weaken Europe threaten the global order the U.S. depends on. In short, Europe faces Russia as a neighbor, but the U.S. faces Russia as a global competitor.

I respectfully disagree. Left unchecked, Russia could easily pull the US into another world war. Before, the threat of a nuclear strike from Russia deterred more action. One positive of the Ukraine invasion - Zelenskyy has demonstrated that harsher actions against Russia won’t necessarily lead to nuclear Armageddon. For too long, that’s what impeded the EU from taking more aggressive action.

Of course. I always take Vladimir Putin’s word for history rather than what I see with my own eyes.

So how did the Summit work out?

From Fox News: The way that it felt in the room was not good. It did not seem like things went well. And it seemed like Putin came in and steam rolled, got right into what he wanted to say and got his photo next to the president and then left."

In other news, ice has been found in Dante’s 9th circle of hell.

I know that is sarcasm coming from you. I sure hope that was sarcasm coming from DrBob, but I’m not sure.

It is shocking how easy it seems to be to manipulate Trump. Just tell him that he is omnipotent, and you’ve got a friend and ally for life ( or for a couple of minutes, depending on which way the wind blows ).

Meanwhile, military personnel from the United States of America literally rolled out a red carpet for a dictator who invaded a sovereign country and is wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes including the stealing of children. (Quote from Heather Cox Richardson)

That’s sad.

Where are those Epstein files?

Well, between 2016 and 2025, US policy has undergone significant developments:
