Netherlands set for right-wing government after Wilders strikes deal
https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/dutch-nationalist-wilders-says-deal-right-wing-government-is-very-close-2024-05-15/
"We have an agreement among negotiators," Wilders, who had already forfeited the position of prime minister to get the parties to the negotiating table, told journalists in The Hague.

Talks had dragged on for months since Wilders’ upset election victory on Nov. 22, with immigration, finances and climate among the key sticking points…

A breakthrough in the discussions was reached in March as Wilders, 60, toned down anti-EU and anti-Islam rhetoric, and dropped opposition to all military support for Ukraine.

I thought Wendy said that INTERNATIONAL politics is not allowed on METAR. I see she thinks your post is OK. Does that mean politics in other INTERNATIONAL countries is OK? How about Israel/Gaza politics?

Ah, you are right.

Under the agreement secured late on October 24, there will be several measures introduced to tighten migration policies but a so-called “asylum crisis” will not be invoked.

Geert Wilders’ Freedom Party (PVV) had been pushing for significant restrictions on mass migration and asylum for the Netherlands but had to compromise with his party’s coalition partners…

Permanent residence permits for asylum seekers will be abolished. Instead, only temporary residence permits that have to be renewed will be available and the validity period of these will be reduced from five to three years. The Netherlands will also introduce border controls at the end of November, based on Article 25 of Schengen Border Code.

Trudeau has recently said his policies were a mistake. He is reversing the policies

Fearless prediction: This anti-immigration sentiment will rapidly and quietly fade away. The reason? The Netherlands is suffering from a significant labor shortage as birth rates decline and the population ages. Economic reality will ultimately drive immigration policy.

@DrBob2

And frankly, Trudeau is not moving fast enough for the Canadian public.

Increase in [Canadian] federal high skilled economic immigration

The [Canadian] federal government is devoting larger proportion of economic immigration to the federal high skilled (FHS) programs managed through Express Entry.

While the PNP targets have been cut significantly, the FHS targets have actually increased:

  • 2025: 124,680 - up from last year’s targets of 110,770 for 2024 and 117,500 for 2025.
  • 2026: 123,230 - up from last year’s target of 117,500 for 2026.

IIRC, Canada has emphasized skilled immigration for some time.

“This development towards sustainable immigration is necessary to strengthen integration and reduce social exclusion,” says Minister for Migration Maria Malmer Stenergard.

While not specific to immigration, this reminds me of a time when I had to travel to Canada for work.

Border Services asked my colleague about the purpose of our trip and his profession. After he replied, they asked, “Aren’t there any Canadians who can do that?”

His response…“Not as good as I can.”

Needless to say, it took us quite awhile to get into the country.

There is a difference between immigration and H-1B visas. An H-1B is limited to 6 years. It is not a pathway to permanent US residence or citizenship.

Steve

I worked with two guys a while back on h1b (Indians) and one of them was also waiting for his green card. Is that possible?

The United States Green Card is a Permanent Resident Card. It’s also a requirement if you someday hope to become a naturalised American citizen.

Whether you’re after citizenship or not, applying for a Green Card is the most plausible visa choice if you wish to remain in the US after exhausting your 6 years of H-1B visa time.

‘No control’: Sweden grapples with bomb violence wave

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson admitted that his government has lost control over a burgeoning wave of violence sweeping the country, amid escalating public concern.

The acknowledgment came during an emergency meeting where Kristersson announced the acceleration of new legislation targeting juvenile involvement in criminal activities.

The beginning of 2025 has seen bombings carried out at an average of one per day, leading to 27 bombings by January 27 – including several in residential communities, the Nordic Times reported.

Immigrant Background and Rape Conviction: A 21-Year Follow-Up Study in Sweden
Khoshnood et al.
https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/08862605241311611
Abstract:
While extensive research exists on the severe consequences among rape victims, little is known about specific predictors in relation to rape convictions among immigrants to Europe. This study from Sweden (having one of Europe’s highest per capita rates of rape) investigates individuals convicted of rape, aggravated rape, attempted rape, or attempted aggravated rape, collectively termed as rape+, against women 18 years or older, from 2000 to 2020. In this case-control study, we analyzed data from Swedish population-based registers. The analysis includes 4,032 individuals convicted of rape+ and 20,160 matched controls. We used logistic regression models to examine the relationship between immigrant background and rape+ convictions, while adjusting for several potential confounders.

We found that 36.9% of the convicted individuals and 69.5% of the controls were Swedish-born with two Swedish-born parents. The odds of being convicted of rape were higher for individuals with an immigrant background across all models. After adjusting for potential confounders (socioeconomic status, substance use disorders, psychiatric disorders, and criminal behavior), these odds decreased but remained significant, especially for those born outside Sweden and arriving at age 15 or older.

Our findings reveal a strong link between immigrant background and rape convictions that remains after statistical adjustment. The mechanisms behind the overrepresentation of individuals with an immigrant background among those convicted of rape+ need further exploration.

Turn off immigration. Something new to blame on Whitey. Welcome to our better-than-yours-country. (That’s why they immigrated) Pardon us if you get convicted for comiting a crime.

And where are The Women on this? They want to convict more “Swedish borns” of rape or are they wokely weeping for the over-convicted guilty rapists?

They say they correct for outliers and context in these studies but like most science, they don’t. They start with a conclusion then simply work the data to that end. I am a sociologist, they do it the same way drug companies do. And the same way people who think there’s life on other planets do. “What do we wish to be true?

Notice the racist pot stirring with no attempt to explain the results except to say “Hey we looked at everything and all we see is they (Meaning White people) don’t like immigrants.”

Europe’s justice and home affairs ministers on Monday approved new measures allowing EU countries to remove failed asylum seekers, set up processing centers overseas and create removal hubs outside their borders — measures Copenhagen has long advocated.

Sweden’s Migration Minister Johan Forssell, a member of the conservative Moderate party, told POLITICO Monday’s deal was vital “to preserve, like, any public trust at all in the migration system today … we need to show that the system is working.”

Stockholm, which has in the past prided itself on taking a liberal approach to migration, has recently undergone a Damascene conversion to the Danish model, implementing tough measures to limit family reunification, tightening rules around obtaining Swedish citizenship, and limiting social benefits for new arrivals.
