This morning at breakfast I received a wierd notice about a device wanting to access facebook. Then almost immediatley my iPhone wanted to do an update. I let the update do it’s thing. Then I kept wondering about the wierd message.
I did a little Google and tried to figure out my Xfinity router’s IP address which is supposed to be printed on the bottom of the router. Then I did the http://10.0.0.1 deal and it took me to Xfinity and of course none of the logon ID’s or passwords worked. So then I went into the Xfinity app on the iPhone and found who is “Connected to your WiFi”.
Out came a list of 12 devices. I identified my computer, the boss’s laptop, our printer, the big TV, the bedroom TV, the printer, two security cameras, our home cell, her cell, my cell and one other device. The unidentified device is labeled “iPhone”. I paused the “iPhone” and have been waiting all day to see if someone complains. So far no one has.
Ok so it isn’t working off cellular? Either way it won’t matter as long as you have an unlimited cell plan. You very well could have caught a free loader.
Or perhaps someone looking around at the devices on your network - interested in what they can get from the eleven you can identify. Do you have your WiFi protected with a password? Even if you do, Apple has this useful feature where another iPhone can ask to be authorized to the network. Great when Uncle Freddie is visiting, not so great if some stranger initiates the request and some family member just hits Yes.
Yes the WiFi is password protected. Son & DIL visited from Florida for Christmas holidays. They both work from home and used our WiFi during their stay. It’s a different world since I left the workforce. Those two can be anywhere and as far as the company knows they are at home in Florida but actually they were in their RV in our driveway in Texas.
This is why I get annoyed at my wife and kids when they leave their iPhone named “iPhone” instead of “David’s iPhone” or whatever might be appropriate. I’ve started showing visitors how to name their iPhone properly before connecting them to my network., heh!
