Posting with italics

When responding to something someone said in another post, most people put the words they are responding to in italics so readers can tell apart what they are writing themselves from what they are responding to. For a long time I didn’t know how to do that until I found the following post:

To put something in italics you put the first set of brackets just as he describes, then where he has “and” you put what you want to italicize, then you add the second set of brackets. Then hit “Preview Message” and you’ll see, to your amazement, that the brackets have disappeared, but what you put inside the brackets is in italics. The same for bold.
