Prevent burnout - resource smoothing, workplace flexibility... and anything that works

Reading about burnout, a growing concern in today’s work environment. Burnout, characterized by chronic stress, exhaustion, and a decline in performance, has reached alarming levels, with nearly 77% of professionals experiencing burnout at their current job. This is alarming, and, personally, I find it outrageous, so I will share some of my thoughts and research findings to try to put my thoughts in order and hopefully calm down.

So, looking into strategies in resource management that can help prevent and combat this, resource smoothing seems like a good one. It offers a proactive approach by distributing work evenly over time, ensuring that team members aren’t overloaded during peak periods. Resource smoothing focuses on maintaining a consistent workload without altering deadlines. This method helps keep the team operating efficiently while avoiding the pitfalls of overworking them. Makes sense.

Another effective strategy to prevent burnout - flexible work arrangements. Managers can create a more supportive environment, leading to higher morale and lower burnout rates. Allowing employees to have some control over their work hours or the option to work remotely can significantly reduce stress and increase job satisfaction. Flexibility helps team members better manage their work-life balance, which is crucial in maintaining their overall well-being.

By carefully planning and balancing tasks, managers indeed can ensure that their team can handle projects without being overwhelmed and reduce the risk of burnout. I don’t want to ask a naive question - why most of them fail to do so, and I’ll just leave it like this. Thanks for bearing with me.

Many companies deal with burn out by rotating assignments, promotions, training, transfers, etc.

Variety of assignments helps.

The worst is facing the same problems again and again over and over.

Technical professionals often build expertice in one area. When you become GMs expert on headlight brackets, you can spend years at it. Probably have dreams about it. A change of pace helps.
