Replacement for an aging Mac Pro?

Further progress, I picked up an extra monitor, from my SIL, so I can see both the old and new macs as I wend my way from the Mac Pro to the Mac Mini Pro. Bigger than I thought, an HP 25" from about ‘09… Found a power cord, still looking for a video cable, DVI if I can find one around here… Oops cancel that, no need, Mac Pro’ AMD 7950 graphics card has HDMI, I use it now to my Dell 32" monitor, Mac Mini has HDMI, as does the HP monitor, so no need for any other than HDMI cables… Too easy, I guess, I expected to have to dig up VGA-DVI or mini display adapter… Nope…

Today’s discovery is that my Office 365 subscription will be fine with the new computer, I’m allowed up to 5 devices, and as of now, only myself & DW, so my copy will move once I’ve moved, so maybe for a time leave it on te old Mac Pro until I move to sell it, give it, away, whatever… And at that point the Updater can bring all the apps up to date…

I also had a folder of old Office 2011 apps, they never made up a 2011 removal tool like they had in the past, I spent some phone time years ago looking for one, they admitted they didn’t make one, but finally today I just deleted the whole folder, rebooted… So now the updater no longer tries to update the old Word app… There may be tendrils buried in the OS, but I hesitate to muck around, afraid I’ll mess up the active apps…

Cloning main SSD to the external OWC enclosure, had an extra 2Tb drive, it failed once upon a time, but seems OK, maybe use it as the only HD I leave in the old Pro…

New Mac Mini Pro has made it from China to AK, KY, was last at Maher, CA, delivery tomorrow…

Progress…

Woo Hoo! Exciting. :gift:

Indeed, at lest now I know it’s here in town! (UPS Tracking shows where the delivery truck is, related to my home)…

I see you’re in Petaluma, CA. Have you been impacted much by the torrent of snow and rain that’s been (and still is) pummeling CA for the past month?

No, other than a lot of rain, new views of snowy hills, but some areas along the Russian River may get close to flood stages, but it’s not new, used to be an annual event, just not for the recent years… Our ‘River’ here can get backed up as high tides will keep the runnoff from escaping into SF Bay, but that’s not unexpected…

More interesting is the nice snowpack being built in the Sierras… Just don’t want to get stuck in it! This is up on the Eastern slope below Donner Pass… Awesome!

BTW, here’s a good view of the Sonoma Square, live, current conditions… As you can see, the hills behind are free of snow, not raining at the moment…

Beautiful pic of the bridge and moon! And wow - there’s barely any sign of either rain or snow in that live-cam video. Lucky you!

Yep, we’re good for now, another storm is heading in, but later tonight I think…

That webcam is a nice bit of work, wish we had others in other towns in the area, there is a couple others at a couple wineries from the same folks…

These folks do have a bit of standing water, but nothing dangerous…

But a week or so ago…

Well that was fun. Not. Migration Assistant insisted on using WiFi until it became apparent that it was going to take forever as in 40-80 hours! Nope.

Rebooted both old n new Macs and used an Ethernet cable directly and after a couple more attempts n reboots it’s finally working on the migration. Instead of 12 mb/s it’s now hitting 112.5 mb/s. So the time is dropping steadily now in the 6 hour range and still decreasing

I’ll restructure it all once it completes…

Whew…

When I bought my house a couple of years ago I ran ethernet to my office, sound system and home theater. Each has a switch. The only important items that rely on WiFi are my car (Tesla) and solar system (also Tesla). I’ve considered running ethernet for the solar but it really has no need for extra bandwidth.

I ran Ethernet all over with switches here in my cave and another in the family room. WiFi is handy for our iPhones and the Rachio drip system as well as the heat n a/c thermostat. I have a reel or more of bulk Cat5e and the connectors, crimpers, tester. So why it insisted on going WiFi when I had the Ethernet connection is a mystery.

Now it’s running at as high as 122 mb/s and the time is under 3 hours. Likely will continue to improve.

No chance yet to check on OS updates so after it finishes the migration I guess.

So I’m off the web on both for now. iPhone works.

New Mac Mini Pro - Migration

Success! It did take a while, but it completed, I’ve shuffled it to the Dell monitor, it’s OS is Ventura, all up to date, but I see several apps that no longer work, so will have to del with them when I get to them, PS/CS6, MacDraft Pro, iPhoto, iDVD also bit the dust, but I haven’t used it in ages…

Office 365/Family gave me a fit, refused to Activate. An online chat got me through it… He tried to Share Screen, wouldn’t work in either Safari or Firefox, so in the end he talked me through the screens, maybe I was fumbling the passwords, but it was refusing to take my email until he was online, so maybe he flipped a toggle somewhere… Whew!

Next Headache, new Mac Mini isn’t seeing the previously set up Home Hub, which means the Logic Circle doorbell camera, a couple outlet gadgets are not seen… I do still get notifications on my iPhone, so I know it’s working, but somehow the New Mac is hiding that linkage…Apple Support…

Update, a bit over an hour with Apple Support, some reboots, screen haring on iPhone & Mini, reboot in Safe Mode, and the discovery of a 2nd Home in the Home Options and it all works as it was…

Onward…

If it was supposed to be simple and easy then anyone could do it.

Oh, wait…

Moving along, just updated CCC to v6 from v5, been solid, well worth it… Cloning this new setup before I mess with the old HDs, cables… Completed as a backup… Still solid…

Have to decide on what to do about Photoshop, I was on v6, not sure I need the full load… Can do a lot in Preview, Photos…

Update: MacDraft v6 (Intel) is outdated… Tough for me to do without…A note to Microspot, response is a deep discount beating the normal Update cost, so I’ll be able to stick with the unlimited Pro version 8! YES was my reply… Update, bought the latest v8.01 of MacDraft Pro, invoice got tangled in the time differences between Britain and California, but it all came though today (Monday), looks great!

Chronosync, didn’t like that I switched hardware, sent a note that I need a new Key, awaiting reply.
Update: Resolved with a Support contact, working great!

App Zapper replaced AppDelete…

I need to see what the limits of Photos are, I lost iPhoto & iPhoto Buddy, but have about 20 Libraries of photos, many likely duplicates, but I can save space if I pull them all in, then, the new Photos has a Duplicates finder, some had 5 or 6 copies, so far, but I had over 4000 with duplicates… Tedious, but doable… (Completed) Maybe need a new Photos, The Missing Manual…

Onward…

Latest foible, I moved the HDs & SSD into the OWC external enclosure, renamed, formatted the HDs, set one as the Time Machine, am now cloning to the other two.

Problem came when I tried to erase the 2 tb SSD with Disk Utility, it hung up, I had to force quit, errors of overallocation, then hung again, forced Quit, finally powered down, removed it, sent a note asking for help from OWC, but it’s the weekend…

Update: I used an external adapter SATA to USB on my MBA and erased the errant OWC SSD, ran First Aid there, both were sussessful. Move the SSD back into the OWC enclosure, and also ran First Aid, it was OK, so am now cloning to it, all seems well

OTOH ChronoSync is up n running, Time Machine did a backup already… Bought the new MacDraft but our time difference means they haven’t sent the download link yet… (Completed)

Onward!

As I chased my Logitech camera issue of an overlaid camera ‘No Response’ over the top of the actual camera view, several support calls to both Apple and Logitech ended with my now reinstalling Ventura. We think the Home App is confused.

Fun day. Not.

Update: Even reinstalling the OS didn’t clear the problem. Too late this evening to call back in…
I must have talked with 6 Apple folks and one Logitech person today, the last at Apple was a Senior Support Tech, so tomorrow willl go from there…:frowning: (Actual reinstall time was a lot shorter, maybe an hour…)

Just keep repeating to yourself: “Apple - It Just Works”. :slightly_smiling_face:

Note: I’ve only owned iPads, and even those often just don’t work the way I want them to!

Well, it’s a tad frustrating as it did work before I moved to the latest OS… Keep on chasing it, I guess…

Better news today is when I called in to Apple Support, I connected with an old timer, Art, who hadn’t seen the problem before, but was a solid investigator…

Once he saw and we’d discussed what went before, as well as his seeing my screen so he saw what was happening, he had me set up a new iCloud Mac account, once it was up, the Home app, camera worked perfectly, no need to re-set it up, even. Flipping back to my normal account, it was still broken, but now we knew it was only in that account!

Option key, Open the Finder library, and we set 6 ‘home’ related files aside into a new folder, rebooted, and the camera was FIXED! The system recreated the errant files, so we went back in, deleted that folder… And now the camera is back woking as it used to, FIXED!

Congratulated Art, and we chatted a bit, good guy, enjoying his job! Thanks Art!

OK, on to other things…

FIXED! FIXED! FIXED! FIXED! FIXED! FIXED! FIXED! FIXED! FIXED! FIXED! FIXED! FIXED! FIXED! FIXED!
