I will be having open-heart surgery in November. (For details, see the METAR Board.)
I expect a 5 day hospital stay. I won’t be strong enough to handle a laptop and I don’t want to strain my eyes using my phone.
Recommendations? A tablet?

Wendy. For what it’s worth I took home delivery of a daily newspaper for years and finally stopped taking it due to late deliveries or non deliveries. I decided on an iPad from Costco. I am very pleased with my current situation. My wife and I can both read the paper at the same time. No more late deliveries or wet papers. The monthly cost of delivery went down low enough that it actually justified the cost of the iPad.
Good luck with your hospital stay and your choice of a tablet.

If you go for an iPad, there is almost universal agreement the iPad Air is best bang for the buck.
The iPad Pro is a typical Apple for their top of the line. The iPad is well behind the Air. The mini is years past when it should have been updated.
Best of luck with your surgery!
Is your phone an iPhone? If so, I heartily endorse the suggestion of an iPad.
However if your phone is an Android, I suggest finding a tablet that uses that. You will already be familiar with how it works, and might install the same familiar apps as on your phone.
Also, while it is useless for using the internet, if you want to read books the Kindle e-reader from Amazon is exceptionally light and convenient.
(As an AAPL investor I feel obligated to add that it would be a fine opportunity for an Android user to become familiar with the Apple system, and possibly happy enough with it to switch to an iPhone at the next upgrade.)
But for this particular purpose, mostly consumption of media, the plain old standard iPad is more than sufficient. They’re on sale periodically for $299 or so.
Just a reminder, whatever your platform, refurbished devices are readily available, as an Apple guy, I looked for them on Amazon, a really wide range is available, a like new warranty, easy return policy, and as noted, an Apple Pen along with the newer iPads would be nice… But even Apple has refurbs available.
All the best… weco
Wendy, Wishing you a healthy swift recovery.
Hi Wendy, hope all goes well with your surgery.
Since you don’t mention what OS you prefer, I will suggest a Microsoft Surface Pro. I have a detachable keyboard which allows my device to function as a tablet. I can attach the very lightweight keyboard and it functions as a laptop. It might be the best of both worlds. HTH…doc
I use an Amazon Fire 10. Works well for me for most internet functions. Android device. Not as powerful as a laptop but fine for most uses. Light weight. Easy to carry around. Mine uses Wifi.
@pauleckler thanks for the advice. That’s what I’ll get.
