So is England and Germany - that doesn’t mean that we need to own them to have effective defense. We already troops in all three countries (Germany, England, and Greenland).
If we own them, then we HAVE TO defend them. Who wants to own Taiwan?

Chamath Palihapitiya (sp?) says that the goal is control of the ‘northern sea lanes’ as the polar ice pack melts.
China n Russia are moving to control sea lanes, too.
