All gendered languages need to be eliminated. Make it illegal to use such languages across the world. For example, Spanish, German, etc would be eliminated.

Equal rights for women hasn’t really caught on in Shiny-land either. That doesn’t mean it is not a good idea. Or are we supposed to roll back the clock 100 years, so no-one has to deal with anything “new”?

The local PBS station has been advertising an upcoming program with performers of both genders, so they bill it as “Latinx”.

oh am I going to reiterate that one

Wakefulness comes from mindfulness and meditating. The use of the poorer grammar “woke” is to mock African Americans who never used the term during the Black Lives Matter protests. It is typical dumb behavior.

Steve, the poll was about the opinions of Latinos/Latinas/Hispanics themselves. If they don’t want to use the term Latinx, why should you push it on them? They don’t think it’s appropriate…

Then again…

Before 2014, the call to “stay woke” was, for many people, unheard of. The idea behind it was common within Black communities at that point — the notion that staying “woke” and alert to the deceptions of other people was a basic survival tactic. But in 2014, following the police killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, “stay woke” suddenly became the cautionary watchword of Black Lives Matter activists…

In the six years since Brown’s death, “woke” has evolved into a single-word summation of leftist political ideology, centered on social justice politics and critical race theory. This framing of “woke” is bipartisan: It’s used as a shorthand for political progressiveness by the left, and as a denigration of leftist culture by the right…

The earliest known examples of wokeness as a concept revolve around the idea of Black consciousness “waking up” to a new reality or activist framework and dates back to the early 20th century…

Lead Belly says at the end of an archival recording of the song that he’d met with the Scottsboro defendants’ lawyer, who introduced him to the men themselves. “I made this little song about down there,” Lead Belly says. “So I advise everybody, be a little careful when they go along through there — best stay woke, keep their eyes open.”

Nah it is just a nasty racist thing to pick up and run with. It is not some sort of summation. It is a poke in the eye at people who care about this country by people who care about using everyone else for gain.

So, Leap, are you going to switch from using male and female to “sp°rm-producing” and “egg-producing”?

This is an example of the semantic version of perjoration, where something that was originally favorable or neutral gains negative connotations over time. Conservatives do this all the time and progressives naively go along with it. Look at what conservatives did with the term “liberal” and how the left rather than defend liberalism instead called themselves progressives.

Woke originally meant being aware of racial prejudice, which means that those who are anti-woke are racists or at best oblivious.

We have allowed conservatives to expand “woke” to mean anything conservatives dislike about the Left. In response, we should further expand that definition to mean anything rational people dislike about the Right. Belief in Qanon is woke, Tucker Carlson is woke, stop the steal is woke. I do that all the time now in discussions with republicans. The prime example of being woke is the banning of Critical Race Theory. The best example of cancel culture is what happened to Liz Cheney. The Right is more woke than the Left.

Liberals have to stop being stupid about the games being played by conservatives.

That’s Vox’s opinion and you’re sticking to it, right?

Left and right have become pejoratives having originated solely from the seating arrangement of the contending parties.

As the debate continued, those who thought the king should have an absolute veto sat on the right of the president of the assembly, and those who thought he should not — the more radical view — sat on the left of the president of the assembly.

Well, of the two opinions – bt’s and the Vox writer’s – the Vox jibes more with what I’ve read.

You are free to have your own opinion, but it certainly appears that ‘woke’ has been used both positively and negatively.

This is from the same Vox article and I think it jibes more with my position than yours.

On the left, to be “woke” means to identify as a staunch social justice advocate who’s abreast of contemporary political concerns — or to be perceived that way, whether or not you ever claimed to be “woke” yourself. At times, the defensiveness surrounding wokeness invites ironic blowback. Consider the 2020 Hulu comedy series Woke, which attempted to deconstruct the identity politics behind ideas like “wokeness,” only to garner criticism for having an outdated and too-centrist political viewpoint — that is, for not being woke enough.

On the right, “woke” like its cousin “canceled” — bespeaks “political correctness” gone awry, and the term itself is usually used sarcastically. At the Republican National Convention in August, right-wing Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) scolded “woketopians,” grouping them together with socialists and Biden supporters, as though the definition of a “woketopian” was self-evident.

I think the author of the Vox article agrees with me that the right is trying to change the meaning of Woke to something negative, away from its original use of being awake to the problems of racial injustice.

In general it has been used positively by Black Americans and negatively by not-so-black Americans, usually of the conservative ilk.

The Legal Defense Fund of the NAACP has a nice editorial describing this.
https://www.naacpldf.org/woke-black-bad/

Michael Harriot, columnist at TheGrio and author of the upcoming book, Black AF History: The Unwhitewashed Story of America, explains that this kind of insidious takeover and flipping of Black vernacular to anti-Black pejorative has numerous parallels in America’s past and runs all the way up to present day.

“When you look at the long arc of history and America’s reaction to the request for Black liberation – every time Black people try to use a phrase or coin a phrase that symbolizes our desire for liberation, it will eventually become a cuss word to white people,” Harriot says in an interview with LDF.
