Will the USA help defend Taiwan? If the Chinese take over Taiwan how will this affect the rest of us? Doesn’t Taiwan make some highly technical computer chips?

Now that will be interesting won’t it? Just exactly what will the United States do?
And what will China do without that advanced chip manufacturing? It is hard to imagine a battle for Taiwan where TSMC doesn’t get trashed.

This is part of why TSMC is opening a fab in Arizona, with help from us. Money well spent I would think.
But what would we do if China invades? That has always been something we have never spelled out, on purpose. I’ve heard everything from nothing, to bomb the fabs, to go to war with China.

Ideally, we bleed China for as long as possible. Just like we are doing to Russia for 2+ years now. That way China gets weakened economically, militarily, and remains in a reduced position of power for a few decades. Then they either learn their lesson (to avoid military adventures at their neighbors) or they don’t and it all repeats again someday.

Um, it’s Ukrainian blood that’s bleeding Russia, and Ukraine lives right there in Ukraine. The US is 7,000 miles from Taiwan, China is 100 miles from it. That makes the logistics of materiel vastly different, China is closing on having an “almost equal” navy, and has hundreds of thousands of (unemployed) young men to suit up, while we have a teetering volunteer army.
I don’t think we’d last 6 months, and that’s my optimistic projection.

I dunno, the incoming Sec Def looks very impressive! He’ll bring back a warrior mentality to our Department of Defense.
The counter attack subs can sink all of them. Sitting ducks.
Then he will sit in the corner, sulk, and then blame everyone else for his own multiple failures.

I thought the sarcasm would be obvious given he’s the most unqualified Sec Def nominee in the history of our country. I’ll add the little

Qualifications aside, yeah, he clearly lacks the character to be trusted with such an important role.

We all should be laughing our *** off on that. Think about that. I have never laughed so hard in my life. A guy who is drunk on the job saying he will stop drinking, Not" I have stopped drinking". But I will stop drinking if I get the job. Dang if they give him the job they deserve him.

If confirmed (which seems highly likely!) I am very curious about how quickly he (and some other cabinet appointees) gets displaced by a (sshhsssh, on the down low here) an actual competent knowledgable shy old anonymous hand who sits two doors down from his secretary and actually runs things, as tedious as that is.
Like in Byzantium for its last 100 years of existence.

iirc, on the last go around, the first group of appointees had some degree of competence. They were progressively replaced by more servile types. I remember one official, as he was leaving said he told TFG “don’t hire another yes-man”. But, hiring “yes-men” is what “JCs” do. So he is starting out with the slavishly devoted this time, instead of having musical chairs. I can make a case, ignoring biases, that Bondi is qualified, and Rubio probably qualified. But there are a lot of…umm…lessee… how can I put this delicately?

War Games they’ve run to model a Taiwan Straights conflict have the US escalating to nuclear use pretty quickly. Aircraft Carriers are obsolete in an era where there is no defense against a hypersonic weapon.

This is sort of a variation of ‘alternative facts.’
The former definition of qualifications for a position use to mean that if you have them, you’re qualified for that position.
