Unofficial Saul/NPI BBN 2-week update

I made a BBN list a bit less than 2 weeks ago (over the weekend, so closing prices as of 5/25/2018 are used as the starting price). Here is a link to one of those threads (cross-posted on Saul’s and NPI board): http://discussion.fool.com/if-there-were-an-npisaul39s-board-bes…

My “official” unofficial list included NTNX, AYX, PSTG, and PVTL, and I subsequently added in NVDA and MDB. Here are the results so-far, with closing prices of May 25 and as of today as the data points.

**Ticker 5/25/2018 6/8/2018	% change**
NTNX $52.50 $56.19 7.03%
AYX $32.49 $37.40 15.11%
PSTG $20.74 $24.47 17.98%
PVTL $18.12 $20.80 14.79%
NVDA	$246.76 $262.28 6.29%
MDB $44.99 $51.92 15.40%

Pretty good so far, but it must be noted that the past 2 weeks have been pretty good for the market overall, with the S&P 500 rising from 2,721.33 to 2,770.03 during the same period for a gain of 2.12%. This unofficial BBN list has, however, crushed the S&P during this very short period.

I should have possibly included more input from DreamerDad and thrown IQ and HUYA into the mix as well. Here is the last 2 weeks for those 2 Chinese streaming-related companies (“Netflix” and “Twitch” “of China”, respectively). Only long shares of IQ between these 2.

Ticker 5/25/2018	6/8/2018	% change
IQ $22.79 $32.82 **44.01%**

Well, looks like that bolded part was a mistake with this morning’s share price rise. Looks like a major shareholder added 200,000 shares (a bit under $8M) and that that might be part of why AYX is up over 5% in early trading this morning.

Since I added in some cells in my spreadsheet to quickly update this, and since there have been a few more crazy price rises the past 2 days, here’s an update with 6/12/2018 closing prices (NOTE: Pivotal could easily be up more than 20% once tomorrow’s normal trading hours begin).

BBN List 5/25/2018	6/12/2018	% change
NTNX $52.50 $60.65 15.52%
AYX $32.49 $39.64 22.01%
PSTG $20.74 $25.02 20.64%
PVTL $18.12 $21.21 17.05%
NVDA $246.76 $262.58 6.41%
MDB $44.99 $56.23 24.98%
**S&P500 2,721.33 2,786.85 2.41% (Wow, what a bull market!!! < / sarcasm >**

Apparently, should have included:
IQ $22.79 $34.52 51.47%
HUYA $23.93 $36.22 51.36%

“NOTE: Pivotal could easily be up more than 20% once tomorrow’s normal trading hours begin”

Volfan,

I was thinking of adding to PVTL anyway, but spurred on by your comment I added 1% to my PVTL position AH last night at $21.84 (when it was up only 7%). That’s worked out pretty well so far. So thanks!

I would have added more but like everything else I have quite a lot.

In seeing what I posted last night, I see that the way I typed the above about Pivotal could have very easily been misconstrued from what I meant in typing it. In this instance, the misconstrued interpretation ended up being reality. My actual meaning with the “up more than 20%” was in regards to an increase from the May 25 closing price, but I see that the way it is worded, someone easily could have read it to mean that Pivotal could be up 20% from yesterday’s closing price.

While Pivotal is up more than 20% from yesterday’s closing price, I did not anticipate that kind of gain, and would like to point out that in this case, my potentially ambiguous wording only ended up being true out of complete luck. I did NOT expect that the 5-7% after-hours bump from yesterday would turn into today’s presently almost 29% bump. I do NOT possess a crystal ball. I am, however, quite pleased with Pivotal’s price action…and due to human nature I will be tempted to further self-promote this initial foray into a BBN list.

PVTL can’t be a best BUY at the moment after such a boost, can it?

So what are the BUY NOW Things?

“So what are the BUY NOW Things? :)”

PSTG has not moved as vertically as recent movers such as MDB and PVTL. For a thorough and thoughtful vetting of PSTG I would do a search of PSTG over the last month or so by Tinker at NPI "New Paradigm Investing"board. But of the stocks that have moved, if you are not in, it might not be a bad idea to dip a toe in case (say even just 10% of your total desired weighting) they continue to run. If they pull back you can add at more favorable entries. I have found that sometimes you price anchor to missing $5 which then becomes $7 , then $12…you get the idea.

That is a great question, isn’t it…might be a good time to simply hold. Surely more good buying opportunities will pop up in the not-too-distant future. With my portfolio blowing the top off its all-time highs, nothing is screaming at me as a buy right now. For full disclosure, I am going to be considering taking a look at buying some short-to-medium duration puts for Square and Shopify after looking a bit at their charts.

This week I have bought shares in Wix (for my mom – my position is large enough) and Nutanix and Pivotal. I also feel like Talend and Hortonworks shares are still attractive, if you’re into that sort of thing – personally I’m keeping those positions under 4%. I’m keeping Arista and Pure Storage under 8%, but I think those are at attractive prices right now. Instructure is still cheap. Micron is still dirt cheap, but I will never add above 4%.

Should have listened to myself more. I did enter a small SQ put position, which I closed out yesterday…but should have followed through after seeing SHOP top $171 and stay above $165-ish through 6/18. The share price had gotten a bit ahead of the company, even if the recent short theses may not be all that robust.

-volfan84
Thinking I recall about a $3-ish price back on 6/15 for July 20 2018 $155 SHOP puts…or maybe even for the $160 strike. Wish I had recorded those prior prices for enhanced learning, but today’s further fall would have worked out well for those.

Nutanix and NVidia are the only 2 that haven’t out-paced the S&P500 during the time period.

Cross-posted as well on the NPI board - Here’s a not-quite 3 month update…MongoDB and Alteryx are now the big-time standouts, with Pivotal still up quite a bit from Memorial Day weekend…with the 2 still-young Chinese video-related companies being far behind their highest-flying peaks.

Of note, to me at least, is that NVDA, PSTG, NTNX, MDB, and PVTL have all yet to have their latest earnings announcements. Only Alteryx and the 2 Chinese video baby IPOs have already announced.

Here is an approximately 3-month update, with Nutanix, MongoDB, and Pivotal still yet-to-announce for the latest quarter (NTNX is tomorrow after the bell, MDB 9/5, and PVTL 9/12 if I’m not mistaken):

Just noticed that I had an error for Pivotal in the posting over on NPI, which I have corrected below…if Pivotal and MongoDB both announce great earnings, this list will seem as cartoonish as the YTD number that Saul will be posting this Saturday/Sunday, which I estimate will be approximately +75+% based on the +55.3% from the July update.
