In total, 376 law enforcement officers — a force larger than the garrison that defended the Alamo — descended upon the school in a chaotic, uncoordinated scene that lasted for more than an hour. The group was devoid of clear leadership, basic communications and sufficient urgency to take down the gunman, the report says.
Ultimately, the report said Customs & Border Patrol agents decided they would breach the classroom without seeking permission from Arredondo. That team killed the gunman at 12:51 p.m., ending the standoff.
So in the face of astonishing failure and incompetence from Texas State and local law enforcement, a Federal response from Customs & Border Patrol finally brought the incident to an end.
Texas leaders should be grateful for the backup from Washington.
That’s what happens when men are frightened of getting shot, regardless of their firepower or what is taking place while they stay out of harm’s way. This shows poor leadership and training more than the fact that each individual “soldier” was frightened to go into battle. Those who led the police should be held responsible for their negligence along with any politician who gives them cover.
Its pretty clear that at Uvalde, the school and local police did not have a plan.
You would hope they would at least lock the doors to the outside. And monitor those entering.
A well run operation would have a set of action plans for most kinds of events. Fire, tornado, hurricane, intruder, medical, etc.
Review them with staff and local authorities at least annually.
I was impressed on 9/11 when NYC showed how well prepared they were for emergencies. They even had triage sites worked out. The command post they chose turned out to be within range of the building collapse, but otherwise, I thought they did very well.

I’m wondering just how many good guys with guns are needed to stop one bad guy with a gun.

One Texas US Senator of Canadian birth has suggested that we arm teachers to respond to mass shootings. Based on the Uvalde response, it’s not clear that would be worse than involving Texas law enforcement.

Perhaps the resolve of many marginally good guys is challenged by the bad guy increasingly being body-armored, equipped with an AR-15, and suicidal on top of it.
But who is to argue if USian society has come to the conclusion that somewhat interfering with a national pastime to avoid periodic sacrificing of 7th graders would be an undue limitation in ‚freedom‘?
Thank you for recommending this post to our Best of feature.

Yeah, a bit odd isn’t it?
Another slightly political oddity to a Canuck used to how our Parliament works is that elected members of a party in power are allowed to vote against the GIC’s and party’s program! Any member doing that here would probably find themselves sitting as an independent in another chair without the funding (controlled by the party) for their own agenda.
OT - those complaining about heat and drought in both US and Europe will I’m sure be pleased to hear that it is 18C (~ 65F) here in Halifax NS and raining.

Just one. Quite obviously none of those 376 were good enough.
