Today I read an article whose title started with Best VPN for Mac. My questions would apply to any OS.
I understand a VPN can make me look like I live in another county. Our TV comes via AT&T fiber and we use a BGW320 gateway supplied by AT&T. Our TV is DirecTV Stream. We also get some streaming feeds through the AT&T fiber and an Apple TV.
When I ask Google how a VPN works, the links say I install (software I assume) on my device. So how can software installed in my computer make/allow my TV whose data stream does not even touch my computer appear to be in another place in the world? It seems to me I would need to change something in my BGW320 gateway to change the apparent location of my TV or iPad.
Each device can have a VPN loaded onto it. But your tv needs to be a smart tv. I have my vpn loaded onto my Windows computer, Microsoft Surface, and Samsung TV. It would be an App on each of those devices. You could load it onto your router, although I havenât done that because sometimes my VPN will lock up and I have to turn it off and turn it back on , in the App, to get it to work. I have it sitting in my tray at the lower portion of my window. To turn in on and off I only need to hit the not connected button.
So the way a VPN works is 2 fold. First the VPN software goes through your connection to the ATT servers and then goes to the servers that the VPN uses before going to any other site that you are surfing. Second, the software encrypts the data that is going back and forth so your internet provider doesnât see what you are seeing. You also have the option for most VPN software to pick the server you want. I have used PIA VPN for many years. I can use a PIA server almost anywhere in the US or in other countries so that my internet provider and big brother doesnât know anything about my browsing habits. Most of the banks and brokerages allow you to use a VPN, but some donât. Oh, I use PIA VPN on my iphone, my ipad and my windows desktop without any problems. I hope this is understandable and clear. I get no reward from PIA recommending them to you. Also, PIA does not record nor save any sites you visit so that they canât reproduce your history for a subpoena. I like VPN to keep big brother and social media sites like FB, IG etc from tracking my internet historyâŚdoc
This sounds like it might create lags in responses to clicks or requests for downloads. I do not use internet games - rather I am wondering about pages updating, responses to clicking âNextâ, etc.
I looked at websites for 3 VPNs and they all indicated the need for and availability for separt installs/software with each device. I do have Smart TVs - they come with too much preinstalled stuff for streaming services in many cases I didnât know existed. But nobody has indicated how to install their VPN on my Sony TVs.
Would you mind sharing how you got the required App and installed it on your TV?
Sure GW. Sony has an android (google) os. So you need to go into your apps and find the google play store. If you hover over the App it should tell you which one it is. Click on the Play store app and search for your VPN. The only VPN I use is ExpressVPN so I am not sure if the other ones are in there but I would assume they are. Finding the VPN click install and then when it installs you click open and sign into the VPN. Sometimes the VPN will go to sleep so when you get done using it you might want to close it. If you are having problems with getting something on your tv you might want to close it also. Then open it if you need to have it.
I understand if you have a Sony Bravia with a linux os you canât install other apps. So in order to get other apps on you tv you would need to go to another streaming device. I recommend Firetv since it is very simple to use and works great. Then you would follow my directions to load it on the Firetv. Here is the video on the Sony Bravia. The easiest way to find out is to follow these directions.
I put the VPN in my favorites for my Samsung tv so it is easy to find. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.
Not with a good VPN service. I have 1 gig internet and through the VPN i get speeds of 80-90 megabits/sec which is plenty fast for downloads and FUBO , Amazon Prime , NetflixâŚdoc
One thing about TV service is some wonât let you stream through VPN. I believe this has to do with piracy by out of country people recording and retransmitting the movie or shows illegally. Andy might be knowledgeable about the TV and movie services that block VPN. I guess i could research it on my desktop and see which ones block that I pay forâŚdoc
With ExpressVPN, what I do is switch cities,(servers), and usually I will find one that works. What happens is that all servers have a block of IPâs that are assigned to them. The tv services will block those assigned IPâs but not know of others so they stream. ExpressVPN will also help you find a server if you call their customer service, but I have never had to do that yet.
Its 100 here in TX at noon but Iâve been to visit her and its been 120 and higher there. She tells me âbut its a dry heatâ lol and she has a poolâŚdoc
People in Texas come here to get away from the heat. They say the humidity is to much. I come from Montana so the heat was very hard to handle the first few years but the falls, winter, and springs are great. My Dad comes from Strawn, Texas (When I say Strawn, that was just the closest town) and I used to spend time down there visiting my Granny and we would go over to San Antonio. Beautiful country and really like San Antonio. I havenât been to the coast buy want to go fishing down there. I heard it was good.
Be glad you donât live in so. Florida - heat/humidity triple digits for past few weeks. Unable to breathe anything but humidity in the air. Hibernating in A/C houseâŚdo daily walk prior to 7:30 a.m. before sunupâŚugh!
I get up at 5:00 to get my walk in. Itâs like I tell my relatives. I donât wear a parka in the summer time, but then again I donât wear one in the winter either.
Andy, I just got back from 2 weeks down on the coast. The fishing was good and I have speckled trout and redfish in the freezer. The weather was good and the water was great. The coast from Corpus Christi down to Mexico is the same color water that you see in Florida. Itâs pretty nice.
This year was the first in many that we had a lot of tar balls on the beach and that made it quite disgusting. Also, I saw yesterday where there were numerous shark attacks on the beach in South Padre Island yesterday. As long as i have gone down there, there hasnât been any shark attacks. There was a video of a big shark swimming in the first gut along the beach postedâŚdoc
