I have “Battery Technology” on my Google news feed. It is my impression that most of the fundamental science and engineering advancements are coming out of China and most of the announcement of partnership’s, investments and “breakthroughs” are coming out of the USA.
10 years ago the science was being led by the USA. It almost seems (note the stunning lack of data in these observations) that China is becoming the leader in knowledge and the USA is becoming the manufacturing hub.
Interesting.

Not too surprising. China dominates the market for battery grade lithium. They also have invested heavily in lithium mining companies in Australia and South America.
They are very good at long range planning and getting there first. US now is investing to catch up. But now with battery EVs slowing US investment is also slowing with some projects on hold. No new US capacity running as far as i know.
I think you expect China to continue investing to maintain their lead. US catch-up investing looks iffy to me.
