I suspect that trade with aliens would be similar to trade with humans on Earth.

Well first let’s understand that if they land “here”, they will be “illegal aliens”, and therefore deported back to wherever they came from. To do that we will have to utilize their own technology, which we will learn from, and therefore the benefits to us will be massive.
If they land somewhere else with less Draconian attitudes, then they will make friends, provide a technology transfer on decent terms, and that country will leapfrog anything any of us have ever thought about, so we will march with determination into the dust bin of history.

Larry Niven wrote a short story (The Fourth Profession) in which the aliens (the Monks) were interested in our liqueurs and gins. They traded for them with knowledge pills.
