When HP Toner runs out

My HP printer has a system that projects remaining capacity. It is clear to me the color cartridges print more copies than the system projects. Can somebody tell me what happens when a cartridge actually runs out of toner? Does it stop printing? Does it damage the drum? Does it just fail to match colors because it lacks one color component?

iirc, when mine ran out of one color, it kept printing switching to another available color.

It keeps printing, just the colors get all messed up. I have an HP laserjet and the print gets faded when the cartridge gets low. I’ll be switching to an Epson that takes the refill as the laser refills for my old laserjet have gone up to $100 now that they don’t make the printer anymore…doc
