There are only 145 million Russians, there are only 2.3 percent of the Russian men between the ages of 20-24. Or a little over 3 million.
While this is less than 1 percent of the men of that age group, continuing losses at that level are not sustainable. Remember, Pearl Harbor was around 3000 dead as was 911. 6000 would be complete political disaster.

Poroshenko is a liar. I stopped listening to him. His previous claims wildly inflated numbers reported by reputable media in Ukraine as eyewitnesses.

I don’t believe the 6,000 figure. That’s Omaha Beach numbers. The combat footage available so far shows small skirmishes.
From the History Rhymes Dept: Some time ago, I read “Forgotten Solder” by Guy Sajer. Sajer grew up in Alsace which has been owned by both Germany and France at various times. Sajar enlisted in the German army as a teenager mid-war and was sent to the Eastern Front. Things started off bad, and went way downhill from there. One thing that is relevant here is the amount of trouble Ukrainian partisans caused the German army. The Russians might be in for a long slog. Very good book if you are into that sort of thing.

11.905 births per 1000 people
The current birth rate for Russia in 2022 is 11.617 births per 1000 people, a 2.42% decline from 2021. The birth rate for Russia in 2021 was 11.905 births per 1000 people, a 2.37% decline from 2020. The birth rate for Russia in 2020 was 12.194 births per 1000 people, a 2.31% decline from 2019.
I’m not sure if still true but Russians famously practiced birth control by free abortions.

And their death rate is 12.985 per 1000 - not including effects of this war, which is going to cost them some people in their prime child-bearing years.
Maybe starting a war was a bad idea…
… and if Putin wants to use historical boundaries as justification for this war, perhaps we should remind him that Moscow was founded as a provincial capital of an empire run from Lithuania. (Not in the sense of “we’re going to re-establish it”, but in the sense of “if historical boundaries, why not THOSE ones, or perhaps you’d like to withdraw the idea?”)
