Arcam

Arcam, easily the best of the investable 3D print companies. They make Sketchers look very good ;(

Arcam has most everything that you want in a tech investment. Solves critical problems with proprietary technology they own that is completely disruptive into an existing market that needs the solution.

Everything that is except, growth. Now is the beginning of the age of Arcam. GE, Alcoa, Boeing and others are beginning to make real time components with EBM and yet growth has stagnated, at least for now.

Will demand for EBM remain a mostly stagnant but fascinating niche or is now the time to buy for a bright and soon to resume rapid growth future?

Some years ago, when it was also “about to explode” I took a position in Arcam. It seems to be the stock that’s always “about” to get there but never arrives. This has been going on just like this for years. The story is great. They seem to be doing good things. They make great, sensible acquisitions. It just never gets there.

Unfortunately they remind me of those IPO’s where management figures they can just keep raising money and they never have to actually make any. I may be completely wrong, and they’ll take off next quarter, but I haven’t seen any signs that it’s really happening.

Here are some of the players in 3D printing:

3D Systems Corporation (NYSE:DDD)
Stratasys, Ltd. (NASDAQ:SSYS)
ExOne Co (NASDAQ:XONE)
Arcam AB ORD (NASDAQOTH:AMAVF)
Voxeljet AG (ADR) (NYSE:VJET)
Dassault Systèmes SE (OTC: DASTY)

At least one of them has a negative EPS greater than the share price, so tread carefully.

Dassault is actually a software company, and some of their software is for 3D printing. TMF recommends them, though I don’t know in which service(s).

Another possibility would be service bureau-type companies. They don’t make the printers, but they are experts at using them for clients.
