Assorted boards (not this one) now closed

Rather abrupt if you ask me. shrug

Think how much TMF will save in energy costs by killing some of its most visited boards. I wonder how many positions it will eliminate because they don’t have to support them.

I think they may have just had interested moderators, maybe not compensated employees to sort out some of the problems on the few boards where there were issues, but I’ve never seen any actual job description so far…

OTOH it’s kida nice not to see the Ignored Fool Yap notes…

You might suspect those rather inactive boards still required management time to deal with posts that violated the rules. Copyright issues. Libel, slander. Constant worries that had to be monitored.

Many regular posters will likely try to relocate their favorite topics to surviving boards.

We shall see how much they actually save.

… and I don’t like the new and cumbersome format.

I haven’t seen a new format. The boards that remain seem identical.

That is my temporary concern as well. Hopefully whatever 2.0 version they roll out will allow them to perma ban by IP so no more doppels. Otherwise, all they likely accomplish is pushing the trolls from the political boards to the investment boards.

perma ban by IP

Lots of services occasionally change clients IP address so banning by IP address won’t work.

I think the political stuff will drift elsewhere, and the long-rehashed arguments will die out or transfer to other more fertile ground. Hopefully the parts about figuring out a financially intelligent life can re-bloom here.

ThyPeace, there seems to still be life.

Yeah banning by IP won’t work if you use VPN. But maybe it’ll work for non geeks. Now, banning by MAC address…hmmm

Obviously if we ban by country we should ban all Russian IP address groups. Bunch of trolls.

You cant trace a mac address off of its own network.

Not to mention it is another thing that is pretty easy to modify if you know what you are doing.
Identities online are pretty easy to fake. You can always close the persons account and make accounts register via 2 factor and use a phone number. Of course there are ways to set up a temp phone number to get around that as well.

Largely a losing battle.

Don’t even need to set up a temp phone number. Caller ID number is very easy to spoof.

Largely a losing battle.
As evidenced by the huge number of phony spam & scam calls we get. We and everyone we’d talked to, something like 90% of the incoming calls are from scammers and another 5% from spammers. In our case, most of them show a caller ID in our (very) small town.

You mean the IRS isn’t calling me to refinance my new car warranty to protect my credit from the identity theft insurance scandal affecting my snoring spouse?

Little known fact: Yes, the IRS is in that business. But they only have one person who makes those calls, in a thick foreign accent. Anyone else is a scam.

Because all 145 million people there are trolls? Interesting you think that where a person resides on the planet dictates they are all trolls.

Yes, interesting and going in the right direction. We all pay penalties for the governments we have - here in the US, many of us know that quite well over the past number of years.

Do you have to assume that all “145 million” Russians are trolls to ban them en masse? It’s not like SG is proposing to take food out of Russian babies’ mouths or bomb their homes. She’s proposing banning them all from a message board that will not impose what anyone could call serious harm, after all.

And, enough Russians actually are trolls to potentially make such an action useful, if were even possible to do, that is.

Wow condemning an entire population of people due to where they are born. Stating information like above with absolutely no factual basis.

Absolutely discriminatory.

Yea people get that way when countries threaten them with a life expulsion event. Not me but those other people.

Yeah, that’s pretty similar to Fox News Republicans assuming that every person who looks Hispanic is an illegal alien, or that anyone who is Black is a street thug. - nessie

I’m sure glad TMF eliminated politics from the community.
