A cost-of-living crisis in Britain is about to get worse, with millions of people paying about 80% more a year on their household energy bills starting in October.

The U.K. energy regulator on Friday announced the latest price cap, which is the maximum amount that gas suppliers can charge customers per unit of energy. It means people will pay 3,549 pounds ($4,188) a year for heating and electricity.

What does this mean exactly? After you reach 3,549 pounds, all your energy has no further cost? Does this mean that come October/November/December, everyone will be raising their thermostats as high as they please, taking long hot showers, etc? Maybe have one of the extra plug-in radiators for the bedroom?

That number refers to the ‘typical’ energy bill. The cap is on what the utility can charge per unit.

And in Ireland…

Athlone cafe owner shocked after getting €9,000 electricity bill
www.irishtimes.com/ireland/2022/08/30/athlone-cafe-owner-sho…
The owner of a small coffee shop in the centre of Athlone was shocked when she opened her electricity bill this week and realised she had been charged almost €10,000 for just over two months of energy usage.

The cost of electricity to the Poppyfields cafe for 73 days from early June until the end of August came in at €9,024.70 an increase of 250 per cent in just 12 months. There doesn’t include the €812.22 in VAT, which brought her total bill to €9,836.92.

It has left Geraldine Dolan wondering if she will be able to continue running the business she has owned for the last 16 years as Ireland heads into what is certain to be a winter of rising energy prices and cost of living spikes.
