OT: RIP Harry Belafonte

Harry Belafonte (civil rights activist, entertainer, singer with a beautiful voice) died at 96.

Ms. Wolf always made it clear from the start, that if Harry or Paul Newman proposed to her, she was dumping me.

In her defense, if either of them had proposed to me, I would have dumped her (not that there’s anything wrong with that).

He was great in concert, too. And a wonderful human being (they’re in short supply these days). RIP

I think Midnight Special (husband’s favorite when we started dating) is going to get some playing today. Still have the LP.

I will admit that my first thought when I read that he had died was the use of the Banana Boat song in Beetlejuice. I am so shallow that I reflect myself.

The story out of Ireland goes, my mother and her sister Mary would tell one of their aunts something to upset the aunt. Namely telling her that they would park their shoes under Harry’s bed anytime.

The Jamaica Farewell. Mom says I saw it on TV in 1956, was entranced, and that it was the first adult song I ever learned to sing. It still fills me with endless longing.
