“It is a behemoth of a corporation,” Sawant told supporters outside of Starbucks’ corporate headquarters. “If Starbucks workers succeed in building a union, and not just building a union but winning a fair contract, this will be nothing short of an earthquake. It will be unprecedented in the fast food industry and the first successful union drive of this giant scale in the private sector in decades.”

Starbucks is one of the country’s largest retail employers, operating about 9,000 stores nationwide. Representatives from Starbucks were not immediately available for comment.

Starbucks leadership has long acknowledged it does not want store workers to form unions. Doing so would give baristas the opportunity to collectively bargain over issues such as pay, benefits, working conditions and time off.
