Shipping broker report mid Jan 2025

I think a few shipping brokers did start publishing the first week in Jan 2025. But a better indication of normality might be this week. Carriers decided to call their release “… Week 1 & 2”

At this stage of 2025, I wasn’t really expecting much developments. There’s a lot going on - lackluster China (demand), ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, ships avoiding the Red Sea, dark fleet vessels, threat of tariff concerns, etc.

I guess, if one has a largish fleet, they might comb thru their fleet and make a decision on whether to keep an older vessel. I’m guessing “Torm Helvig”, a 20-year old vessel is such a case. Sold for a lot more than its scrap price, so there’s an opportunity to recycle capital.

Slightly boring at the start of an uncertain year. Just skimmed Intermodal for their edition of week 2 2025

Intermodal mention a few more newbuild orders (Page 5) - 11 newbuilds + 4 options. But, the more interesting data from them was on Page 1. The page discussed 2025 additions to the fleet. The clean tanker segment is expected to see a huge increase - 179 vessels over 10000 DWT (largest increase since 2009). No idea on the vessel types among those 179 vessels. But, that many vessels is likely to various actions by the existing players in the sub-sector.
