Bruce Power's A units New Record

Nice to see my home province boys doing well. I suppose I should mention that my very large position in Tc Energy (TRP.to) has a 48.4 per cent stake in Bruce Power that has a total of 8 reactors leased from the Ontario government (4 each in Bruce A and B). They also have a thriving Medical Isotopes business.

Bruce Power positively impacts millions of people. Aside from providing carbon-free electricity for the consumers of Ontario, Bruce Power also benefits the world’s health care system through the production of medical isotopes.

Bruce Powers Bruce A units reach new record

By Janice MacKay January 18, 2022 3:06pm

Bruce Power reports their Bruce A units reached a new record of 100 days of continuous operation for all four units. The four units in the Bruce A station were shut down and placed in layup by the former Ontario Hydro between 1995-1998, and were returned to service by Bruce Power, starting with Unit 3 in 2004.

Bruce Power claims the power from units 1 to 4 provided the government with 70 per cent of the carbon-free energy it needed to shut down coal. In 2014, the Ontario government closed its final Coal plant in what is considered the largest clean-air initiative in North America.

“Ontarians count on Bruce Power to provide a reliable source of clean energy,”

You may be interested in the following article from Forbes, on Canada-US cooperation in the nuclear power field. The ANEEL fuel described toward the end sounds like an interesting development. It would be a way to introduce thorium into existing CANDU plants. However, it also evidently requires enriched uranium, so Canada would need to purchase enrichment services from either the US or Europe. The enrichment concentration is also higher than normal, but the amount of waste generated is greatly reduced.

Thanks Pete. Interesting stuff. To a great extent CANDU was developed to avoid the very high cost and whiff of weapons inherent in enrichment? The Chinese have I think experimented with mixing spent PWR fuel (DUPIC) in at least one of their CANDU reactors?

It is sort of nice to see a sudden international interest in our mostly unrecognized secret successes in the field. Another thought is that we actually have a pretty large reserve of uranium. Cameco cut production due to low prices though there seems to be opening up going on now.

India with almost none seems more interested in thorium though I haven’t heard anything on the subject recently.

Again thanks.
